The 2023 AFC U-17 Championship has 16 participating teams, divided equally into 4 groups. According to the competition format, each group will play a round-robin to calculate ranking points. The first and second teams in each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
U.17 Thailand and U.17 Yemen are the two teams that have quickly secured tickets to the quarter-finals.
Up to now, Group A is the earliest group to be decided. After the first two matches, U.17 Yemen and host U.17 Thailand have won all, have 6 points and are sure to continue. In the final match taking place on June 21, U.17 Thailand and U.17 Yemen will meet to compete for the top spot in Group A.
In group B, U.17 Korea is sure to be in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, in Group B, U.17 Korea proved their superiority with 2 victories (6-1 against Qatar and 4-0 against Afghanistan). Thus, the team from the land of kimchi has also secured a place in the quarterfinals. In the final match, U.17 Korea will face U.17 Iran, while U.17 Qatar will face U.17 Afghanistan.
U.17 Saudi Arabia is overwhelmingly strong and continues with the top position in Group C
Similar to U.17 Korea in Group B, U.17 Saudi Arabia also showed complete dominance in Group C. The West Asian team defeated the strong teams U.17 Australia and U.17 Tajikistan with the same score of 2-0. U.17 Saudi Arabia has also secured a place in the quarterfinals with the top position in Group C. In the final match on June 22, U.17 Saudi Arabia will meet U.17 China, while U.17 Australia will face U.17 Tajikistan.
Group D must wait until the end of the third round to reveal the next team.
Group D is considered the most attractive group at the 2023 AFC U-17 Championship. After the first round, the two matches between U.17 Vietnam - U.17 India and U.17 Japan - U.17 Uzbekistan both ended in a 1-1 draw. This afternoon (June 20), the second round will take place. However, in theory, Group D will only determine the two teams that will advance after the final round ends on June 23.
U.17 Vietnam in the draw with U.17 India
In particular, U.17 Vietnam had a regrettable draw with the easiest opponent in Group D, U.17 India. Therefore, coach Hoang Anh Tuan's team fell into a difficult situation when having to face the next two very strong opponents, U.17 Japan and U.17 Uzbekistan.
At 5:00 p.m. this afternoon (June 20), U.17 Vietnam must score against U.17 Japan to have a chance to advance to the next round.
