The New York Times on June 20 cited a disclosure statement showing that billionaire Timothy Mellon donated $50 million to the political action committee "Make America Great Again" (MGA), a committee supporting former President Donald Trump's re-election campaign.

This is one of the largest campaign donations in US history and is expected to quickly impact the 2024 White House race.

By the end of April, MGA had only $34.5 million in hand, but at present, the committee's budget has increased to nearly $70 million after billionaire Mellon's sponsorship move.

Mr. Mellon was the first person to donate $100 million to candidates in this year’s presidential election. In addition to supporting Mr. Trump, the billionaire also supported the campaign of independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Former President Trump is trying to rally support from billionaires in his White House bid. According to Business Insider, many billionaires want Trump to be re-elected, including longtime acquaintances and relatively new figures.

American billionaire Elon Musk recently said that Mr. Trump took the initiative to call him and they discussed electric cars. Mr. Trump said that "electric cars are good for the future" as well as "America is the leading country in electric cars".

Previously, the Wall Street Journal quoted a well-informed source as saying that Mr. Trump was considering appointing Mr. Musk as an advisor if he was re-elected.
