Ta Phin is an inland commune of Dong Van district, 12 km from the district center. The whole commune has 9 villages, 100% of the population is Mong ethnic group, the poverty rate is over 68%. In addition, the terrain is mainly rocky mountains, the climate is harsh, dry, cold, and prolonged cold, the agricultural land area is extremely scarce, with only over 398 hectares of production land, accounting for 18.9% of the natural area. Since the implementation of Resolution No. 05 of the Provincial Party Committee on renovating mixed gardens and creating livelihoods for people, it has contributed to changing part of the appearance of the commune, the lives of many families participating in renovating mixed gardens have been improved.

We visited the garden of Mr. Lau Sua Co's family in Sa Tung Chu village, a household that is considered to have successfully renovated mixed gardens in the commune. It is known that with an area of nearly 5,000 m2 of production land, there were previously corn fields, fruit trees, and vacant plots. After receiving guidance from the local Party Committee and government, in 2021, Mr. Co's family renovated the land into cabbage fields; plum fields combined with ginger fields and ginseng fields for easy care. In addition, he also raises 30 commercial pigs, sows, and breeding cows. In 2024, after deducting expenses, his family earned over 200 million VND.

Mr. Lau Sua Co said: I myself used to work very hard, actively converting crops and livestock, but it was not really effective because I had not determined which plants and animals were suitable. When I was guided to renovate the garden, guided on planning and care techniques, my family's garden was truly revived. Up to now, my family grows cabbage in one plot; one plot is for growing vegetables, in the summer we will grow ginseng and potatoes; on the high, sloping land, my family piles rocks and plants plums, and plants ginger at the base to increase productivity. I, like many households in the village and commune, take advantage of every rock cavity and every square meter of land for cultivation.

Besides renovating the mixed garden, the family of Mr. Lau Sua Co, Sa Tung Chu village, Ta Phin commune also raises breeding cows to increase income.

It is known that the whole Ta Phin commune is currently maintaining 29 mixed garden renovations with a total area of 40.5 thousand m2. Of which, 17 gardens meet 4 criteria, 12 gardens meet 3 criteria; 10 gardens combine livestock farming with short-term vegetable and fruit growing; 8 gardens combine livestock farming with short-term fruit tree growing; 11 gardens grow short-term fruit trees and vegetables. Up to now, after more than 3 years of implementation, each garden has an average income of 28 million VND/household/year, 3 times higher than before renovation; 5 households have escaped poverty, 8 households have moved from poor to near-poor households. In particular, the commune has also encouraged 15 households to participate in the renovation of mixed gardens without support loans, with a total area of over 23,000 m2. All gardens meet 4 criteria, with an average income of 27 million VND/household/year. Some gardens are considered highly effective such as: Mr. Lau Sua Co's household, Mr. Giang Mi Gia's household in Sa Tung Chu village; Mr. Giang Sua Dia's household in Ta Phin B village...

Comrade Ly Ngoc Long, Secretary of the Party Committee of Ta Phin Commune, said: During the implementation process, despite many difficulties, the commune always closely followed up to direct the professional staff to focus on guiding households to take care of the gardens to achieve the highest productivity. In particular, implementing the motto of going to each house, entering each garden to work with the people. At the same time, helping people find outlets for their products. Up to now, when having effective gardens with high income, people in the commune have changed their production thinking, being more proactive in renovating their family gardens. In the coming time, the commune will continue to promote propaganda to ensure that the gardens after renovation will develop more and more sustainably, contributing positively to poverty reduction in the area.

Overcoming difficulties in land, water, and terrain, people in Ta Phin commune have been constantly trying to turn mixed gardens into model gardens. The lush green gardens have been clearly emerging, covering up the grayness of the rocky mountains.
