Dr. Pham Tan Nhat, currently working at the Faculty of Business Administration, International University (VNU-HCM), is one of the winners of the Third Prize, Science and Technology Award for young lecturers in higher education institutions in 2021, with the topic of Greening the hospitality industry: How do green human resource management practices influence organizational citizenship behavior in hotels? A mixed-methods study.
Dr. Pham Tan Nhat has had 22 articles published in prestigious international journals in the Scopus and ISI databases, of which 15 are in Q1-ranked journals and 7 are in Q2-ranked journals. Notably, among them, there are 05 articles in A*-ranked journals (by ABDC - Australia) and 01 article in 4*-ranked journals (by ABS - UK). ABDC and ABS are the 02 rankings of the most prestigious and popular scientific journals in the field of economics in general. Dr. Pham Tan Nhat has been participating in projects of NAFOSTED, VNU-HCM, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, and International University.
Scientific research is passion
With an outstanding record of achievements in scientific research, Dr. Pham Tan Nhat still modestly shared that "those achievements are not outstanding compared to his colleagues in the world, they are the result of his passion, along with his own efforts over the past many years".
Dr. Pham Tan Nhat said: Ever since he graduated, when he did market research for a company in Ho Chi Minh City, he liked doing scientific research. Later, when he returned to work in the university education environment, he had more opportunities to pursue his passion. Currently, at the International University, scientific research is one of the two main tasks of a lecturer, so he considers scientific research a job that must be done seriously, not just for personal enjoyment.
Talking about the reason for devoting so much time and passion to research, Dr. Nhat said: “I started doing scientific research in 2016, quite late compared to other teachers and young researchers. But I soon decided that my career was teaching. When teaching, I definitely have to do research. I remember that when I decided to return to work in Vietnam, my close friend once reminded me that “with the job of a lecturer, even if you don’t like it, scientific research, especially the ability to publish internationally, is the most important asset.”
Dr. Pham Tan Nhat believes that research topics often originate from reality in parallel with a solid theoretical overview. The award-winning topic is no exception. And Among the many studies he has conducted, Dr. Nhat likes the most the research on green human resource management published in the largest journal in the industry, Tourism Management (A*-ABDC). This article is recognized as the most influential in the period from 2019-2022 in Tourism Management magazine.
Dr. Nhat said: To conduct this research, he had to “rely on support” from many relationships to survey data and conduct different studies in Vietnam. Its value, in short, is a very new study on the topic of environmentally friendly human resource management in the hotel environment, and explores its role in employee behavior and attitudes. Thereby, this research also provides policy implications for hotels to build a human resource management system oriented towards environmental protection.
“This research has given me many memories, including one memorable one. When I finished the manuscript of the article, I discussed with the professor about which journal to submit the article to. The professor directed me to submit it to a Q1 journal with a relatively high acceptance rate. She did not want me to take risks because if I was unlucky, this could prolong my studies. However, I later convinced her to submit the article to the largest journal in the field. After some hesitation, the professor agreed. After a long time of going through many rounds of editing, the article was finally accepted. The day I received the acceptance letter from the journal, I was extremely happy and later wherever the professor went, he bragged to his students that I had an article in that journal. I was really happy,” Dr. Pham Tan Nhat confided.
During the process of doing scientific research, Dr. Pham Tan Nhat said that this has never been an easy job, especially after the doctoral period, because he had to worry about many things such as teaching, management work, taking care of children, stabilizing the family, etc., so the time for scientific research also "gradually decreased". When I had just finished my doctoral degree, I had to spend some time getting used to the new job. Because the 5-year period after the doctorate is very important, if I cannot maintain the pace of research, maintaining motivation and improving scientific research productivity is a very difficult process. Although there has been attention from the leaders of VNU-HCM and the International University, to improve the quality of scientific research, it requires more support in terms of funding, databases, as well as opportunities to connect with prestigious scientists in the industry...
Along with the support of VNU-HCM, International University, and the teachers in the Faculty, his own efforts are extremely important. Dr. Nhat is always aware that scientific research is the main task of a lecturer. That is also the motivation for him to pursue it seriously.
Spreading passion for scientific research to students through projects
Dr. Pham Tan Nhat has spread his passion for scientific research to his students by sharing stories about research, the difficulties and benefits of doing scientific research with students and trainees. After the COVID-19 pandemic, in the past two years, he has "attracted" not only doctoral biological researchers but also undergraduate students to join his research group. Although they have never had research experience, I have always encouraged and supported them to help about 10 undergraduate students have articles published in international conferences. Notably, recently, 02 students won consolation prizes in a scientific research competition in the round in Vietnam. Currently, these 02 students have been selected to continue participating in the international round to compete with other students around the world.
Not only does he instill a love for scientific research in students, as a lecturer and a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Dr. Pham Tan Nhat also uses his own efforts in professional work and in the common work of the School and Faculty to encourage young party members to practice and constantly strive to become more mature.
Dr. Pham Tan Nhat always hopes that his students understand that joining the Party is not for promotion, but to better understand the Party and its development path and the country, through which they know how to change and develop themselves, contributing a small part to the overall development of the country. This is promoted when you know what you need and want to strive for. As a Party member, whether working in a domestic or foreign organization, you should try your best to train and develop yourself.
For his own efforts, Dr. Pham Tan Nhat has been recognized and honored with certificates of merit from the Ministry of Education and Training; VNU-HCM; International University and science and technology awards for young lecturers in higher education institutions in 2021, the Ministry of Education and Training in 2021./.
