Why only increase the quota for two majors: medicine and dentistry?
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi, Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, said that the school's admission method has some new points that candidates need to pay attention to. This year, the school expanded the number of majors that use the A00 combination (math, physics, chemistry) in addition to the traditional B00 combination (math, chemistry, biology). Accordingly, except for 3 majors that only use the B00 combination (medicine, dentistry and traditional medicine), the remaining majors use both the A00 and B00 combinations.
All majors have an additional admission method in the form of combining preliminary selection with international English certificates. In particular, the medical and dental majors have an additional admission method based on SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) results. The school does not use the reserved scores from previous years' high school graduation exams and national high school exams for admission.
Regarding the admission quota, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi said that the group with IELTS certificate in 2024 is 40%, and the group with SAT results is 5%. In case method 2, method 3, method 4 and method 5 do not meet the quota, the remaining quota of these methods will be added to the quota of method 1.
"This year, the medical major increased from 400 to 420, and the dental - maxillofacial major from 120 to 126 compared to last year. The reason for the increase in quotas for these two majors is because the school added a new admission method. The increased quota is used to consider admission for the new method and is not disrupted, ensuring the rights of candidates participating in the admission methods that were available from last year," Mr. Khoi further explained.
How is the SAT score calculated?
Providing more information about the new admission method applied for the first time this year, the Head of the Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy said that the school only considers candidates with SAT scores of 1,340 or higher. The SAT certificate is valid for 2 years from the deadline for receiving application documents.
Specific admission requirements include: Candidates must have graduated from high school and the results of the 2024 high school graduation exam must have a total score of 3 exams/subjects in math, chemistry, biology and priority points (if any) must be equal to or above the minimum score threshold to ensure input quality as prescribed by the Admissions Council of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Regarding the admission principles, Associate Professor Khoi said that the admission score is the SAT score. The list of successful candidates is selected according to the admission score, from highest to lowest until the quota is met. In case many candidates have the same admission score at the end of the list, the school will give priority to the candidate with the higher preference.
Responding to a parent's concern, Associate Professor Nguyen Ngoc Khoi said: "The admission method based on SAT exam scores is an early admission method. The school will announce a list of candidates eligible for this method, but candidates need to register their admission wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's common portal. If they do not register, candidates are considered to have missed the right to be officially admitted and this quota will be used to consider other candidates."
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi also paid special attention to candidates when placing their wishes on the registration system of the Ministry of Education and Training. Sharing with students, he said that there was a candidate who, although his exam score was equal to the standard score, was still unable to enroll at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City. The reason was that when registering his wishes, this candidate placed his first wish at another school and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City was placed in his second wish. When considering the order of priority, the candidate passed his first wish at another school even though that major had a lower standard score than the major in his second wish.

5 independent recruitment methods
In 2024, the school will recruit students according to 5 independent methods. Method 1: Recruitment based on the results of the 2024 high school graduation exam. Method 2: Recruitment based on the results of the 2024 high school graduation exam combined with preliminary selection of international English certificates (for all training majors). Candidates with IELTS Academic 6.0 or higher can apply for admission to the following majors: medicine, preventive medicine, traditional medicine, dentistry. Candidates with IELTS Academic 5.0 or higher can apply for admission to the remaining majors. IELTS certificate-issuing units include: British Council (BC), International Development Program (IDP).
Method 3: Consider the results of the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) for medical and dental majors. Method 4: Consider direct admission according to the regulations in Article 8 of the 2024 University Admission Regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. Method 5: This method applies to pre-university students from Ho Chi Minh City University Preparatory School and Nha Trang Central Ethnic University Preparatory School.
Regarding method 2, Associate Professor Khoi noted that the admission score is based on the scores of the exams/subjects according to the combined admission score scale in the 2024 high school graduation exam (plus priority points if any). However, to participate in this method, candidates need to meet the preliminary requirements for English certificates of each major according to the above regulations. "The admission score of candidates in method 2 must not be lower than the admission score in method 1 in the same major by 2 points," said Associate Professor Khoi.
