(HNMO) - China recently issued guidelines to build a basic elderly care system by 2025 to prevent a demographic crisis.
Caring for the elderly with low pensions is one of the pressing issues for Chinese policymakers as they deal with a demographic downturn.
The Chinese government has mobilized resources to ensure that vulnerable age groups receive the care they need as the population ages. In 2020, citizens aged 65 and over accounted for 13.5% of the country’s population, up from 8.87% in 2010.
According to Xinhua, promoting the construction of a basic elderly care service system is an important task in implementing the national strategy on coping with population aging and equalizing basic public services.
The Chinese government requires provinces to implement a list of basic elderly care services based on factors such as economic and social development levels and financial status.
Support services include physical, nursing and care. Provinces must also provide care and visitation services for the elderly living alone and families facing financial difficulties, while improving the basic pension system and implementing a long-term care security system that links insurance and benefits.
China’s National Health Commission (NHC) predicts that the population aged 60 and above will reach 400 million by 2035, up from 280 million today. This means that community facilities and nursing homes will need about 40 million beds, five times the current 8 million.
Newly built elderly care facilities will follow Chinese government standards, while older facilities will be renovated to provide a safe, convenient and comfortable environment.
