On the afternoon of April 4, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Earth Sciences, said that this afternoon in Kon Plong district (Kon Tum), 6 consecutive earthquakes occurred.
Accordingly, between 11:31 and 12:41, in the Kon Plong area, 6 consecutive earthquakes occurred, including 3 earthquakes of magnitude 3.4 (magnitude M), the rest were earthquakes of magnitude 2.6, 2.7 and 3. The focal depth of these earthquakes was about 8.1 - 8.2 km.
The disaster risk level of these earthquakes is level 0 (no damage).
Currently, the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Earth Sciences is continuing to monitor this earthquake.
Previously on March 31, in Kon Plong district, there were 5 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.6 to 3.1.
In Vietnam, earthquakes of magnitude 2-3 and 3-4 are considered weak earthquakes.
Earthquakes of magnitude 2-3 are felt by some people as very light vibrations, without causing damage to buildings. The average frequency of occurrence worldwide is about 1 million each year.
Earthquakes of magnitude 3-4 are felt by some people, but rarely cause damage and can be felt shaking objects in the house. Every year, there are about 100,000 earthquakes in the world.
From April 2021 to now, hundreds of earthquakes have occurred in Kon Tum, concentrated in Kon Plong district, in which the earthquakes caused widespread tremors.
The largest earthquake occurred at noon on July 28, 2024 with a magnitude of 5.0, before that on August 23, 2022, there was a magnitude 4.7 earthquake.
According to Mr. Xuan Anh, "triggered earthquakes" are the cause of earthquakes in recent years in Kon Tum province.
"According to preliminary studies, earthquakes in Kon Tum are forecast to continue in the coming time but are unlikely to be greater than 5.5 magnitude. However, more detailed studies are still needed to assess earthquake activity in this area," said Mr. Xuan Anh.
