Trong Hieu: 'I don't use music to make money'

VnExpressVnExpress30/03/2024

Trong Hieu said he makes music to connect people, he doesn't like running shows all day to make money.

In early March, Trong Hieu performed the final concert of his tour in five cities in Germany. The singer launched his final project in 2023 to celebrate eight years of his career. When he returned home, he had a conversation about work and life.

- What was your experience after the tour ended?

- I am happy and proud of the crew and myself for successfully performing the program abroad for the first time. At the end of the last show in Hamburg, I knelt down and cried because I felt grateful.

For a long time, I dreamed of organizing my own live tour - where the audience comes to join in the rhythm. When my wish came true, I felt that the efforts, sweat, tears and even blood shed over many years of singing were worth it. Hearing the audience say the words Trong Hieu shared on stage, wrote in songs, helping people live more positively, I became more convinced that my career choice was the right one.

- What difficulties did you encounter when implementing the project?

- In the country, I have everything like shows, loving fans, and a comfortable life. However, going abroad, I have to rebuild from zero, including investing effort, money, and accepting the fact that viewers don't know "Who is Trong Hieu".

However, I want to give it my all for the sole purpose of living my passion. I want to inspire those who feel weak, have no faith or are laughed at by others. Anyone can make their dreams come true, as long as they don’t give up.

- Looking back on your musical career, what do you feel?

- Many people think that a singer's explosion is having a hit song and making a lot of money. However, for me, an artist's mark is also shown in many ways. Even though I don't have a hit song, I'm proud to have been in the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest and to have carried out my own project abroad.

When I was young, I didn’t dare to wear short-sleeved shirts because I was afraid that my arms were too small. I used to try to act cool, imitating the style of other men. But then, I realized that I am a person with Vietnamese blood, born and raised in Germany. Through each stage of growing up and working, I always examine myself, recognizing my strengths and weaknesses, both physically and mentally.

My biggest regret to date is that I didn’t have time to change myself to be better and show my father how much I’ve grown up before he passed away. Since my father passed away, I’ve realized that I need to cherish every moment with my loved ones and learn how to treat them so that I won’t regret it later.

- How is your current thinking about your career different from before?

- I have always been steadfast in making music, not for the purpose of becoming famous or making money. I failed five times in a music competition but did not give up because it was my passion. If it was for money or fame, I would not have persevered so much.

The Greek composer Vangelis once said that making music for money is almost a kind of "crime" because we end up surrounded by a series of mixed sounds, creating a large amount of unnecessary music, not for the public but for the purposes of those who only want to sell music.

I don't try to find a hit song to perform on shows and then sing that song for the rest of my life. What I want is to experience, to be ready to renew myself, to create music that makes the listener's heart dance.

- The Vietnamese music market has more and more prominent Gen Z factors, what do you think you need to do to make a difference?

- I am always aware that there are always people who are better than me, so I have to be humble and appreciate what I have. The fact that many young singers are appearing in the music industry is a good sign. I do not see this as pressure or unhealthy competition, on the contrary, it is a motivation to be creative.

I would be happy if someone commented: "Trong Hieu goes against the flow compared to his colleagues, creating his own style". When making products, I incorporate traditional cultural images such as conical hats, ao dai, folk dances, combined with modern elements such as hip hop dance. I wear crop tops and use conical hats as accessories. This once caused a reaction from some audiences, but I have been supported by international viewers through my performances. Through music and fashion, I want to erase some prejudices.

- At the age of 31, what plans do you have for your personal life?

- I don't have any need to get married. At this age, some people are in love for the first time, others are experienced. Each person needs to know what they want and what to do to be happy. I like freedom, joy, and flying everywhere. For me, bringing joy to the audience, especially children, is the meaning of life.

Trong Hieu grew up in Germany before returning to Vietnam to participate in Vietnam Idol 2015, winning the championship. He has songs such as Con duong toi, I'm Sorry Babe (Khac Hung), Anh do roi day, Ve the gioi (composed by him). In March 2023, the singer participated in the Eurovision Song Contest (European Television Song Contest), finishing third.
