The handover of coastal areas to people for aquaculture has contributed to the rapid recovery of the key economic sector of Van Don district, Quang Ninh province after super typhoon Yagi. Renting sea surface, people in a district of Quang Ninh province build cages to release all kinds of precious seafood. Thanh Tuyen Sunday, February 2, 2025 05:38 AM (GMT+7) The handover of coastal areas to people for aquaculture has contributed to the rapid recovery of the key economic sector of Van Don district, Quang Ninh province after super typhoon Yagi.
Promoting the existing potential, in recent years, aquaculture and fishing have always affirmed themselves as the key economic sector of Van Don district, Quang Ninh province. The output of aquaculture and fishing in Van Don has continuously increased over the years. From aquaculture, many households in Van Don district have become rich, many households have become millionaires and billionaires.
However, storm No. 3 (super typhoon Yagi) made landfall directly in Quang Ninh in September 2024, causing severe damage to the province's aquaculture "barnacle". The entire aquaculture area in Van Don sea was almost completely wiped out. Of which, the total output of aquatic products ready for harvest was about 32,112 tons (25,638 tons of oysters, 636 tons of fish and 5,840 tons of other seafood). In addition, storm No. 3 also damaged about 2,000 hectares of oysters and 3,500 newly stocked fish cages. The total damage to aquaculture in Van Don district was about 2,300 billion VND.
In order for people to start restoring production after the damage caused by storm No. 3, Quang Ninh province in general and Van Don district in particular have actively participated and implemented many support solutions. The extension of bank debt and many other support methods have helped people quickly rebuild aquaculture activities. Currently, the aquaculture area restored after the super Yagi is 3,577 hectares. Aquaculture output is estimated at 4,670 tons, of which the output of exploited aquatic products is estimated at 1,650 tons, the output of aquaculture is estimated at 3,020 tons. In addition, up to now, people have restored and repaired over 6,400 fish cages, restored scaffolding over 5,400 hectares, and planted seeds over 2,669 hectares...
Up to now, everything has gradually returned to normal. Now, the vast Van Don sea is full of HDPE plastic buoys floating on the water surface, row after row, extremely beautiful. These are all areas where people re-stocked fish after the storm, bringing confidence and expectation to the people.
For Van Don fishermen, super typhoon Yagi may have swept away all their life savings, but it could not sweep away their aspiration and will to get rich from the sea. Every day, hundreds of Van Don fishermen’s boats still enter and exit the port. These are fishing boats, passenger boats, and floating material boats to rebuild aquaculture on offshore islands.
According to many people in Van Don district, right after the storm, they took full advantage of their family, friends, and the support of local authorities to buy new materials, hire workers to rebuild rafts, and release new seeds to quickly rebuild aquaculture activities. As early as December 2024, people released oyster, grouper, clam, etc. seeds because this is the most suitable time to release new seeds. At this time, the water temperature is still cool, the released seeds are easy to adapt, healthy, and develop. In addition, releasing seeds at this time will help limit oyster pests and harvest before the storm season arrives.
In addition to support solutions, Van Don district authorities are also speeding up the progress of handing over aquaculture areas according to the Project "Developing aquaculture at sea in Van Don district to 2030, with a vision to 2045".
According to the report of Van Don District People's Committee, as of January 17, 2025, in the district, Trung Nam Aquatic Cooperative has rented a sea area of 47.98 hectares. In addition, 5 units have been granted licenses for marine aquaculture with an area of 2,009.8 hectares, including: Van Don Trading Company Limited; Manh Duc Aquatic Trading and Service Cooperative; Trong Vinh Aquatic Trading and Service Cooperative; Bao Anh Aquatic Services and Cultivation Cooperative; Thang Loi Aquatic Cooperative. The district has also assigned boundary markers and a sea area of 8,589 hectares to 85 cooperatives with 1,208 establishments/households. Van Don has also assigned a sea area to 5 households specializing in cage fish farming (under 1 hectare within 3 nautical miles under the authority of the District People's Committee) with a total area of 2.6 hectares.
Mr. Tran Van Thien - Director of Van Don Milk Oyster Cooperative said that the time when super typhoon Yagi swept through, it caused heavy damage to the members of the cooperative. His family also lost all their assets, including the entire milk oyster farm that was about to be harvested, so the damage was even greater. Up to now, the cooperative's cage system has been basically restored. The fact that Van Don District People's Committee assigned the aquaculture area is an important condition for his family as well as other farming households to feel secure in re-establishing production after the storm.
Each oyster, fish, clam, mussel… released into the sea carries with it the hope of the people here to start over from the sea. Overcoming pain and loss, the fishermen of Van Don are still determined to stick to the sea, continuing to make a fortune from the sea.
The allocation of sea areas to people for aquaculture has really contributed to the rapid restoration of the key economic sector of aquaculture, promoting local socio-economic development.
