The arrowroot plant is also known as the galangal plant. In the localities of Tay Hoa district (Phu Yen province), people often call it the banana taro plant.
Arrowroot (banana root) has a sweet taste, helps to cool down and calm the nerves effectively.
Arrowroot can be processed into flour, cakes, vermicelli, tapioca pearls to cook sweet soup or can also be boiled and eaten immediately.
A bush of arrowroot with delicious tubers pulled up in the garden of Mr. Le Xep, a farmer in Hoa Binh 1 commune, Tay Hoa district (Phu Yen province).
According to Mr. Le Xep, in 2020, he happened to visit some neighboring provinces and found the planting and processing of arrowroot interesting. Then he learned more through books and newspapers and gradually became interested in arrowroot.
Realizing that this is a tree that adapts to the climate and soil conditions and can grow well locally, he decided to invest in buying seeds to plant.
Having successfully grown arrowroot, Mr. Le Xep took the risk of buying a machine to process arrowroot tubers when harvesting them. Four years have passed since then.

Mr. Le Xep, a farmer in Hoa Binh 1 commune, Tay Hoa district (Phu Yen province) next to a bush of arrowroot plants grown in his garden.
Mr. Xep added: Currently there are two types of cassava: white cassava and red cassava. There are two ways to propagate cassava.
That is to separate the young shoots from old bushes or use old tubers that are not damaged by pests or rotten, use a knife to cut the tubers into cuttings, each cutting has at least 2-3 eyes, then dip them in kitchen ash to stop the sap.
After cutting the cuttings, arrange them evenly on trays, leave them in a dry, shady place, water them to incubate them for 1-2 weeks, then the cassia cuttings will sprout buds. When the cuttings are about 3-5 cm long and have at least 1-2 buds, they can be planted.
Although arrowroot can be grown on many types of soil, on loose, humus-rich, moist, sunny soil, arrowroot grows strongly, giving high tuber yield and good quality.
Therefore, the alluvial land along the Ba River is very suitable. The time to plant arrowroot in Tay Hoa district is from August to January of the lunar calendar every year, best planted at the beginning of the rainy season.

Mr. Le Xep introduces arrowroot powder, a delicious powder.
Regarding powder processing, 10 kg of fresh tubers will produce 1 kg of powder. Steps to process powder from arrowroot tubers: First, wash the tubers, then put them in a blender to peel off all the skin, filter to get the moist powder, then dry for 5-7 days.
The current selling price of arrowroot powder is 110,000 VND/kg of finished powder. With an area of 2,000 m2 of arrowroot, he can harvest an average of 200 kg of dry powder per crop year.
Besides, with the machines available, he bought more black turmeric and yellow turmeric to process and sell to those in need.
In the near future, he plans to label the packaging of arrowroot powder to register for the 3-star OCOP product vote.
