Entering 2024, Phuong Anh Dao is the name that receives a lot of attention from the audience when taking on the main role of Tran Thanh's movie Mai . In the movie, the character Mai has a romantic relationship with Duong (Tuan Tran) even though she is 7 years older than him. With her deep acting, Phuong Anh Dao makes the audience believe that she is really Mai and she is in love with Tuan Tran.
In a conversation with VTC News, actress Phuong Anh Dao said she felt quite shy when filming the hot scene in the movie Mai.
Tran Thanh is the most perfectionist director
- What chance helped Phuong Anh Dao get the role of Mai in Tran Thanh's movie to be shown during Tet?
When the Mai project was first announced, Mr. Tran Thanh said he was looking for someone to play the female lead. At that time, Phuong Anh Dao was at home watching the livestream of the project launch event and was very calm because she thought Mr. Thanh was about to make another interesting movie.
I'm really always in the mindset of a very young actor, wanting to have opportunities to play many different types of roles, to be challenged, to discover how I can transform, how diverse I can appear, or to have the opportunity to work with many directors to improve my acting skills.
One day, a sister texted me to come to the casting to see if I was suitable for the role of Mai that Thanh was looking for. When I went to meet Thanh, it was a very gentle meeting, we made an appointment to have coffee in the afternoon, Thanh said he had this project and if I was interested when he invited me to the casting.
The day of the casting is probably the day I will never forget in my career. I did not see the script, but only heard Thanh talk about a few scenes. I did not know the story in advance, I had to think up my own lines. Then, after I tried to express myself in about 3 scenes and waited for about 20 minutes, Thanh suddenly said: Here it is! So Thanh chose me to play the main role.
- How did Phuong Anh Dao feel when Tran Thanh chose her right away after seeing her co-star?
I was very surprised. This was also the first time I worked with everyone. I thought it would take more time, but surprisingly, I got the role in just one afternoon.
The incident happened so suddenly that I had not yet fully recovered from the events of that day. However, this was truly a very memorable moment in my acting career.
- Tran Thanh is a filmmaker who always sets box office records. When working with this artist, what pressures and expectations does Phuong Anh Dao have?
Pressure is something that is never lacking in life because it is pressure that motivates us to strive harder. Everyone also sees that Thanh's previous films had high revenue because the content of the films touched the audience, this is what I tried to do when playing Mai.
Mai will be different from the previous characters I have played. Honestly, I have been acting in movies for about 4-5 years, but this time, when working on the project, Mai was still nervous and worried. What I needed was to play Mai in the best way possible, to portray the character in the most profound way.
As for revenue, if it is high, it proves that the film reaches many audiences and the message is spread more widely. Being sympathized by the audience is a very happy thing for actors as well as filmmakers.
- Some people say that playing the main role in Tran Thanh's movie can change your luck and life. Is that true for Phuong Anh Dao?
I've heard that many times, but I think it's like this: there are times in everyone's life when we need to be more daring. That means we have to be willing to step over the old to advance in our careers.
I never deny the past, I always appreciate my colleagues, teachers and colleagues who accumulated experience with me in the past. They have contributed to helping me get to where I am today. The path I take never has just one stop, it is a long journey of collecting efforts and opportunities. From number 1 comes number 2 and finally makes Phuong Anh Dao today.
- Is Tran Thanh difficult?
Mr. Thanh is difficult but it is a reasonable difficulty, a difficult task. There are difficulties that he sets that make me feel very excited when conquering a certain challenge.
Like everyone said, Thanh often changes the script, changes the details but the framework is always the same. That means the script is only a part, when he gets to the scene, Thanh will change it to suit the context and the character's emotions.
Mr. Thanh is a perfectionist, always wanting to have the most profound scenes, depicting the depth of the story. The script develops day by day, right on the scene, Mr. Thanh and everyone else work and build it, live with it. Working with Mr. Thanh is truly wonderful.
Every day of filming Mai was a challenge for me, like the scenes that I already knew and rehearsed well but when I got to the set, they were completely new. In just one morning, everyone had to rehearse everything, it was like learning from scratch. This was both difficult but also exciting for me.
People ask me if Tran Thanh is the most difficult director among those I have worked with? How to say, if I say that Thanh is the most difficult, it is not true, because there is no comparison. Each director has different skills to work with actors.
Mr. Thanh should be called the most perfectionist director! Mr. Charlie is also very perfectionist and taught me many lessons, but only Mr. Thanh is the most talkative, always using language to discuss everything. From directing scenes, directing acting to analyzing each scene, character psychology, Mr. Thanh says everything for everyone to grasp and discuss.
- During work, has Phuong Anh Dao ever been scolded by Tran Thanh?
Scolding to make yourself better is definitely true. I don't know what experiences people had working with Mr. Thanh before, but when I worked with Mr. Thanh, I was surprised.
I have also heard people in the industry say that Thanh is very difficult, when working together he will be this and that, but when I go to the set, I feel that Thanh is very good at evoking emotions for the character. Thanh makes me feel familiar, close to everyone in the crew, from this familiarity it is easier to work and be more creative.
However, there was one time when we didn't understand each other while filming. I invited Thanh to talk and solve the problem in one afternoon. After that, we happily got back together and continued working very smoothly and effectively.
- Is Mai the role that Phuong Anh Dao is most satisfied with?
I think at this moment, the whole crew, not just me, has the right to be proud of what we have done, devoting our efforts in the conditions we have for Mai . We have done our best. I have lived and gone to the end with the character's emotions, so I feel that even if I want to, at a time in my life, I should be proud of what I have tried to do.
I hope that after this project, there will be more projects with special characters so that like today, people will give me applause and recognition for my transformation. That is something I really appreciate. I am looking forward to sitting down and listening to all the opinions of the audience.
Speaking out about the intimate scene in the movie with Tuan Tran
- In the movie “Mai”, I saw Phuong Anh Dao and Tuan Tran have many intimate scenes. They even filmed quite intense bed scenes. How did these scenes go?
I have never filmed a scene that did not serve the story or the content of the film. All the scenes I have filmed, including the hot scenes, were to develop the story.
Intimate scenes make the two characters become "transparent", they see through each other, understand each other's feelings better, which leads to absolute trust.
The hot scene between me and Tuan Tran took 3 days to film. I was really shocked but knew for sure that this scene was really safe, everyone covered us very well. When watching the movie, it feels hot, but when filming, everyone always tried to make us feel comfortable, at the same time the scene met the requirements of emotion and aesthetics.
- Many viewers think that the hot scene between Tuan Tran and Phuong Anh Dao is quite intense. Did you know this?
It may look like that on screen, but when filming, everyone followed the protection very carefully. The crew used tricks to get the best angle without revealing too much. Everyone was very considerate, ensuring the technique so that we were less shy. But I have to admit that it was just less shy, but to say that there was absolutely no shyness or embarrassment is not correct. Now that I think about it, I naturally feel shy too.
There is one thing I also want to mention, that is, filming hot scenes is really hot. Hot here means hot and tiring. Most of the time, both Tuan Tran and I are shy when filming intimate scenes so we don't share or talk too much, we just focus on working, and when we're done, that's it.
- But I think you two should also say something to each other so that filming this hot scene goes more smoothly, right?
Oh, I just remember that when filming, Tuan said he would help me cover up. People talk about the hot scene because they think it's revealing, but in reality it's not. The problem between us is how to get everything back to normal after filming the hot scene so we can continue working.
The hottest scene that you see on the show was filmed on day 10 of the 40-day schedule. Before filming that scene, we tried to make the chemistry between us more real, to bring the emotions up to the level that you see.
- Regarding the movie “Mai”, many viewers believe that there is a real love story between Phuong Anh Dao and Tuan Tran. What does Phuong Anh Dao say about this?
Everyone just go see the movie and you will know. After finishing a movie, we are in a normal working relationship, we are still friends, support each other and are good co-stars. Hopefully there will be other projects to continue collaborating.
