The former Miss Bolivia and her Brazilian pilot boyfriend Carlos Díaz were arrested on January 23 after their Cessna 210 landed in Ibicuy, a rural town in Entre Ríos province, northeastern Argentina.
Authorities found about 359 kilograms of cocaine divided into 352 packages inside the plane.
Security Minister Nestor Roncaglia told Argentina's Clarín newspaper that the couple took off from Bolivia and had flown about 1,500 kilometers when they realized the plane was running low on fuel and had to make an emergency landing.
He believes they may have flown to Buenos Aires as it is only about 10 minutes away from the capital's airspace.
Roncaglia said investigators are looking into whether Callaú is the daughter of a Bolivian drug lord.
However, it was revealed that she is related to Jorge Granier, who was arrested in Brazil in March 2023 and later extradited to Argentina, where he is facing drug trafficking charges, including supplying aircraft to local drug traffickers.
Callaú tried to prevent the arrest by telling police she was pregnant and needed to be taken to the hospital, Roncaglia said.
After police discovered the "huge" drug shipment, she allegedly tried to bribe police with $60,000.
Despite not having enough cash on hand, Callaú promised that someone would wire the money to them.
Callaú's mother, Patricia Barriga, told Clarín that she ran a warehouse and her husband, Luis Callaú, was a cattle rancher. She insisted to the newspaper that Callaú had never been involved in drug trafficking.
"We work all day, from a very early age, to be able to help our children. We have four children, three girls and one boy. Callaú is the oldest. Jade lives with her sister Diana in Trinidad, a university city, where they both live in an apartment that my husband and I pay the rent for," she said.
Barriga recalled last speaking with Callaú on January 20 and did not feel her daughter was involved in any illegal dealings.
"I don't know what happened to her, maybe she was deceived. Obviously, if that's the case, she made the wrong decision, but Jade is a simple, humble and friendly girl," the heartbroken mother expressed.
"The truth is that I learned about this on TV and I couldn't believe it. What I'm sure of is that Jade was not involved in drug trafficking, as they say in Argentina... This is the first time," Barriga added.
Jade Callaú was crowned Miss FexpoBorja 2019 in San Borja and has appeared many times on television.
