A place for those who love to experience and explore
Hoang Nguu Son Peak is one of the beautiful mountain ranges with a panoramic view of the beautiful Nha Trang City. This is a suitable climbing spot for those who are passionate about adventure sports and want to travel to Nha Trang on their own. At the same time, it is also an attractive camping spot for backpackers. This mountain is located in Phuoc Dong Commune, Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province with an altitude of about 972m above sea level.
According to the “backpackers”, the mountain climbing route is not easy, the path is quite steep; many sections are difficult to move due to large rocks, slippery dirt roads, narrow streams, and many grass fields around, which will make the climber tired and exhausted. Therefore, before climbing the mountain, it is necessary to exercise, prepare well physically and mentally.
A group of mountain climbers conquered Hoang Nguu Son peak.
To make the trip more complete, climbers need to prepare a detailed and clear schedule, along with necessary necessities and should go in groups of 2 or more to ensure safety and support each other when needed. During the process of climbing the mountain, you will see many beautiful scenes along the way. When reaching the top, you can see the whole beautiful city of Nha Trang. Visitors can also camp, organize meals and rest overnight on the journey.
Mr. Nguyen Hau Can, a tourist from Tra Vinh province, said: “I have experienced and conquered many mountains in Bao Loc city, Lam Dong province. Once, my friends introduced me to Hoang Nguu Son peak. Seeing that the climbing level was more difficult and I could see the most beautiful panoramic view of Nha Trang, I decided to experience it once. In my opinion, for those who like to travel and explore nature, this is a place worth trying.”
Journey to conquer the "roof" of Nha Trang
At the end of August 2023, following a mountain climbing group, Nguoi Dua Tin reporters recorded the interesting experiences of locals and tourists when conquering the "roof of Nha Trang" in 2 days and 1 night. Before climbing the mountain, the group prepared necessary items such as clothes, gloves, sticks, tents, sleeping bags, personal tools, medicine and first aid supplies, food, water, etc. In addition, they also used walkie-talkies to communicate with each other.
Our group had 24 people, the youngest was 10 years old, the oldest was 68 years old. On the afternoon of the first day, after parking our car at a grocery store, the whole group set off. The journey started from the right edge of the foot of the mountain, following the arrow marks painted on the rocks left by those who had gone before. Along the mountain trail, the whole group followed the signs and tied red strings to mark the group as well as other groups when climbing the mountain.
The whole group sets off.
The mountain forest road has many steep sections, the higher the slope, the steeper it gets. There are some quite narrow paths, many large and small rocks on the way, so climbers need to be careful and observe carefully. During the process of crossing the forest, people pass through 2 wooden bridges across the small stream below. These two self-made bridges lean against large rocks, so climbers can easily cross them. Just cross the second bridge for about 15 minutes to reach the cool stream. The most tiring section and the one that easily discourages "backpackers" is the section moving to the first bridge. However, just overcome it, persevere a little, you will have a journey full of experiences ahead.
Fully equipped, the members embarked on the mountain climbing journey and had rest stops along the way.
At the stream, if the water they brought runs out, climbers can get water from pipes or streams to use after filtering the residue. As a chemistry teacher and also the group leader, Pham Vu Thanh An guided the group to filter stream water using simple tools. “Choose an unused plastic bottle and cut it into two parts. Then, open the top part, remove the cap and turn it upside down on the body of the bottle. People can use medical gauze or filter cloth to put in the top part of the bottle, then pour water in to filter,” said An.
Ms. Tran Thi Sam, a resident of Nha Trang City who has climbed Hoang Nguu Son many times, shared: “The stream is located halfway from the foot of the mountain to the top, so it is convenient for everyone to rest, wash their faces or eat. Here, climbers can soak their feet in cold stream water to reduce fatigue, muscle tension and pain after continuous climbing. This is also a place to get drinking water for those who need it. However, people with digestive problems should try to bring enough water for use.”
After resting and getting water from the stream, the group continued through the forest for about 15 minutes to reach the grass field. The group stopped, cleared the grass, set up tents, had dinner, and chatted together. At this time, the city began to light up. Looking at the city at night from above, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy exclaimed: “The city is so sparkling and magical; it looks like a charming, peaceful valley lit up by thousands of colorful lights. The panoramic view of the city and the night sea is so beautiful that it touches the heart. I was really moved when I looked and tried to find the location of the river, the street, and the area around my small house.”
From the mountain, Nha Trang city looks so sparkling and magical at night.
The group leader tied a red string to a tree in the forest as a signal to keep everyone on track.
Hours of crossing tall grass fields, crossing forests, climbing rocks...
...stop to rest before continuing to climb to the top.
Memorable experiences
The group that day included not only people who are passionate about exploring nature but also many families; couples, fathers and children, mothers and children. Ms. Nguyen Thuy Tuong Vi said that she and her husband really enjoy sports activities, especially mountain climbing. This was the first time they had come to the “roof of Nha Trang” together and had a wonderful experience joining the group.
Looking at his wife affectionately, Mr. Marc Quentier (Swiss nationality) - Vi's husband confided: "I am very happy to have happy moments with my wife and Vietnamese friends. I was touched when I saw you showing your love for your country as well as your hometown Nha Trang. I hope to participate in more meaningful and healthy activities with everyone."
Ms. Nguyen Thuy Tuong Vi and Mr. Marc Quentier experience exploring nature together.
Accompanying her 10-year-old son on the long journey from the foot of the mountain to the top, Ms. Tran Nhu Quynh shared: “I will never forget this trip with my son. Although very tired and sweaty, both mother and son had an interesting experience and explored nature. When we arrived, I still could not believe that I had reached the top of the mountain. Through the trip, my son not only trained his health but also learned a valuable lesson about perseverance to the end, the will to face all difficulties. As long as we try to overcome all obstacles, we will reach the finish line successfully.”
As one of the youngest members of the group, Nguyen Hoang Gia Minh, 10 years old, said he had a memorable journey in his life. “The real-life experience taught me many things that I had never seen in the city,” Minh said.
Mr. Nguy Nhu Anh, 67 years old, one of the oldest members of the group, overcame a long journey to reach the top of the mountain, fulfilling his wish to conquer Hoang Nguu Son once. His most memorable memory is a bowl of porridge cooked by a member of the group in the middle of the night on the mountainside. “The sticky porridge, with a salty taste like the drops of sweat shed on the journey, mixed with the smell of smoke after a light rain, let me feel the unique taste of the wild mountains and forests. Having a bowl of hot porridge in the middle of the forest is really delicious and happy.”
More and more people and tourists are inviting each other to conquer Hoang Nguu Son peak.
