Amidst the debates about Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training on extra teaching and learning, MSc. Nguyen Ho Thuy Anh, former English specialist of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, remembers her English test in middle school that she did not get a perfect score. Only about 10 students in her class who got perfect scores were also those who took extra classes with her, at her house.

In class, she taught how to conjugate the past tense with regular verbs, but she gave questions about the past tense of be, which was and were, which were taught at her home and in her extra classes.
Ms. Thuy Anh said: "At that time, I looked at the teacher strangely."

Then the father gave money for the child to go to extra classes.
Dad took her to the center to register for classes, not to her house. The English tutoring center was located at Phu Nhuan High School (now Han Thuyen School) - with the Streamline English curriculum.
Thanks to the English extra class at the center, the student accepted her "telling the exam questions in advance". From feeling strange, she changed to feeling elated and victorious. However, that feeling still did not make her happy.
"Over the years of studying with many teachers, I met many good teachers. Talking about the bad image of teachers, I only remember this teacher. My father's behavior helped me not to be angry or rude to her, but it did not change the feelings I have about her until now.
For a child of only 12 or 13 years old, her behavior took away his love for the subject. This was a subject I loved very much, but during that whole school year, English became difficult. I avoided looking into her eyes, afraid that she would read my feelings," Ms. Thuy Anh shared.
Later, when she became a mother, Ms. Anh let her child learn English from a young age because she realized that she had a talent for languages. When her child entered secondary school, she also let her child learn math because she saw that she was not very confident in this subject.
Until now, she feels lucky to have found a great math tutor for her daughter. From a girl who was not confident in math, her daughter got 9.75 on the math exam for grade 10. Not only that, the tutor not only taught her math, but also taught her how to behave and how to deal with people, even though his tutoring class was packed.
When her child takes extra classes, she absolutely does not let her child take extra classes directly with the teacher who teaches her child in class. She is afraid that her child will be given fake scores because the tests are given in advance. She is afraid that her child will learn bad behaviors and gradually compromise and yield to these behaviors.
MSc. Nguyen Ho Thuy Anh shared that in the 12 years her child has been in school, she has never been "bullied" by any teacher for not taking extra classes.
Even during those 12 years, I witnessed many times teachers advertising extra classes during regular school hours, such as: "I received a request to open an extra class at home, if any of you have a request, please tell your parents to call me at the phone number...
The female master believes that extra classes are a real need. Students at private schools also attend extra classes. Students at international schools with tuition fees of 500-700 million VND per year also attend extra classes.
Students in the US also take extra classes. Some students in the US take SAT preparation classes from grade 7 to grade 11 or 12, which is 4 to 5 years later.
However, according to Ms. Anh, students in the US or students from standard international schools do not study with their teachers in class, but now, they study with online tutors from online tutoring centers.
MSc. Nguyen Ho Thuy Anh disagrees with the view that extra classes eliminate students' ability to self-study.

She knows many international school students who take extra classes with outside tutors. They actively raise questions, discuss, debate, and deepen their knowledge in class with teachers, instead of passively studying the curriculum content or just learning whatever the teacher gives them.
