On January 12, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council organized the program "People ask - Government answers" with the theme "Tet At Ty, happiness, peace, looking towards the future".

In this program, voters in Ho Chi Minh City expressed their concern that Decree 168 coming into effect has helped people be more aware of obeying traffic laws.

However, voters require responsible units to deploy specific and synchronous solutions in reviewing, organizing and managing the traffic light system to ensure safety, efficiency and rationality.

Answering voters' questions, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport Bui Hoa An said that up to now, the unit is managing 1,070 traffic light posts, of which 843 posts operate independently, pre-programmed to jump seconds on the hour to control traffic flow. 227 signal posts are connected to the city's control center.

Currently, the operation of the traffic light system has been transferred by the Department of Transport to the Traffic Police force from January 1, 2025 according to the new Law on Road Traffic Safety and Order.

According to Mr. An, since Decree 168 took effect, through daily traffic flow assessment, the department has found that traffic participants' awareness has improved, and the situation of traffic not following traffic signals has been greatly reduced.

However, the leaders of the Department of Transport acknowledged that with the high density and traffic volume, especially during the Lunar New Year 2025 and the city's traffic infrastructure with narrow cross-sectional roads, it cannot meet the full traffic flow, leading to the situation of vehicles stopping and waiting for a long time, causing discomfort to the city's residents.

"After reviewing and evaluating, the Department of Transport and the police completed the installation of 50 right turn signs at red lights for motorbikes on the afternoon of January 11. In the coming time, we will continue to research and install more to proactively divide traffic at red lights, avoiding traffic jams and long waiting times for people," Mr. An informed.

Regarding urban order management, a representative of the Department of Transport said that it has coordinated with local authorities to ensure traffic safety.

“The main responsibility still lies with the police and transportation sectors, but the most important support is the awareness of the people right at the front where we live and do business, as well as the local government.

Tomorrow (January 13), the department and relevant agencies will have a meeting to review the city's traffic situation over the past few days, as well as the best direction for reorganizing traffic and traffic signals," Mr. An emphasized.
