South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's life in prison has attracted public attention after the Seoul Western District Court on January 19 issued an official arrest warrant for him to be detained for a maximum of 20 days.
According to The Korea Times , citing information from the South Korean Ministry of Justice, President Yoon Suk Yeol had to wear a green prison uniform, with a prisoner identification number pinned on his chest, instead of the formal suit he wore on January 15 after being arrested by officers from the Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO) at the presidential palace.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol arrives at a detention center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi on January 15, 2025.
Like other prisoners, Mr. Yoon also underwent health checks and had his photograph taken for record. Mr. Yoon is the first sitting president in South Korea to have an official arrest warrant issued.
It is not yet clear whether Mr. Yoon will be wearing a prison uniform and handcuffed on his way to the CIO for questioning or to court for trial.
Considering security concerns as he is president, Mr. Yoon may be allowed to use another method to avoid media coverage, according to The Korea Times . Previously, two former presidents, Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak (arrested in 2017 and 2018, respectively), were allowed to wear civilian clothes when being taken from prison to court.
According to Chosun (South Korea), President Yoon will be held in solitary confinement in a cell of about 10 square meters. Mr. Yoon's room is said to be equipped with a cabinet, sink, television, desk and toilet. Because there is no bed, Mr. Yoon has to sleep on a mattress on the floor - where there is a heating system. Mr. Yoon is served meals in the prison, like ordinary prisoners.
Regarding bathing, the Korean Ministry of Justice granted Mr. Yoon a special privilege to bathe alone, not with other prisoners. Every day, Mr. Yoon was allowed to use the prison's common yard for 1 hour, after the other prisoners had left.
However, the CIO only allowed President Yoon to see his personal lawyer, and banned South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee and his aides from visiting. The Presidential Security Service (PSS) still protects the presidential residence in Seoul and First Lady Kim Keon Hee.
Even though he is in prison, Mr. Yoon is still protected by the PSS. However, the Ministry of Justice prohibits the PSS from protecting the president inside the prison. When he needs to move out of the prison for investigation purposes, he will use a prisoner transport vehicle instead of the guard vehicle. The PSS will move around in their own vehicles to protect the vehicle carrying Mr. Yoon.
