Earlier, on October 5, a source from the Russian Embassy in the United States told TASS that Ambassador Antonov ended his term in Washington and would return to Moscow the following day, October 6.

Also according to TASS , Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the next ambassador to Washington will be chosen at the appropriate time and the results of the upcoming US presidential election will not affect this decision.

The Russian president's spokesman stressed that Moscow's diplomatic relations with Washington were not downgraded either.

Ambassador Anatoly Antonov, 69 years old, has served as Russia's Ambassador to the United States since 2017.

He took over as head of Russia's diplomatic mission in the United States during what is considered the most difficult period in the history of Moscow-Washington relations.

Relations between Washington and Moscow have deteriorated sharply in recent years. Washington has imposed a series of restrictions on Russian diplomats working in the United States.

In 2017, Washington closed the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco, California, and ordered the closure of the Russian diplomatic mission in Seattle, Washington in 2018.
