Finnish President Makes Surprise Visit to the US, Strengthens Relations with Mr. Trump

"President Stubb and I look forward to strengthening the partnership between the United States and Finland, including the purchase and development of a large number of icebreakers - something the United States desperately needs. This will help bring international peace and security to both countries and the world," Trump posted on the Truth Social platform.

During the visit, the two leaders had breakfast, played golf and lunch together, and discussed foreign affairs, including the situation in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Mr. Stubb in Helsinki last week.

The Finnish president's office confirmed the visit was unannounced and unofficial. Earlier, on Friday afternoon, Mr. Trump arrived at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

Finland is currently the world leader in icebreaker manufacturing, with around 80% of icebreaker designs coming from Finnish companies, and 60% of these ships being built in the country's shipyards.

During this trip, President Stubb hopes that “icebreaker diplomacy” can help Finland maintain good relations with the US administration. Finland has a long border with Russia. Finland also broke with decades of neutrality and joined NATO after the war in Ukraine.
