Russia's RIA Novosti news agency said the decree accused the court in The Hague (Netherlands) of "abusing its powers" and engaging in "baseless" actions against the US and its close ally Israel, including opening investigations against personnel from Washington and its allies.

According to Mr. Trump, the ICC has no jurisdiction over the United States or Israel, because neither country is a party to the Rome Statute or an ICC member.

Neither country has ever recognized the ICC's jurisdiction, and both are developed democracies with militaries that strictly adhere to the laws of war.

The order states: "The United States will impose specific and significant consequences on those responsible for ICC violations, which may include freezing the assets of, and suspending the entry into the United States of, ICC officials, employees, and representatives, and their immediate family members."

The 47th White House chief said the ICC's actions against the US and Israel "set a dangerous precedent" by exposing those countries' personnel to "harassment, abuse and possible arrest."

The ICC has not yet commented on the US President's sanctions order. However, according to The Guardian , since Mr. Trump took office, the ICC has been preparing for retaliation from the US President.

During his first term, Mr. Trump imposed financial sanctions and visa bans on then-ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, senior officials and other staff in 2020.

The move came after Ms Bensouda launched an investigation into allegations of war crimes by US forces in Afghanistan. President Joe Biden lifted the sanctions shortly after taking office in 2021.

The ICC was established under the Rome Statute and is based in The Hague. The ICC is the international community's first permanent, independent international criminal court.
