However, on February 6, TASS news agency reported that Movses Harutyunyan, spokesman for Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan, said that Yerevan would not send representatives to attend the meeting.
According to the announcement of the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova about the meeting, the participants are expected to discuss the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation, improve the activities of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, exchange views on current international and regional issues.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that Yerevan would suspend its participation in the activities of the CSTO because, according to him, the organization posed a threat to the sovereignty of the Caucasus country.
Last December, Prime Minister Pashinyan declared that Armenia’s relations with the CSTO had passed the point of no return. Meanwhile, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan told an international forum in the Polish capital Warsaw that Yerevan was calculating all the risks associated with a possible withdrawal from the CSTO.
However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously noted that Yerevan has not yet submitted any documents related to its withdrawal from the CSTO. Noting that member states have every right to make such decisions, he said that Armenia will make the most of its membership in the CSTO.
Armenia is currently taking steps to "go towards the West", away from Russia and the organization led by Moscow, the CSTO. Most recently, on January 14, Armenia announced its preparations to join the US-led international coalition to fight the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization. Previously, on January 9, the Armenian government passed a bill on the process of joining the European Union (EU).
The CSTO was founded in 1982 and currently has six members: Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
