Accompanying President Tokayev in the official delegation were: Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Murat Nurtleu; Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Trade and Integration Serik Zhumangarin; Deputy Chief of the Presidential Office, Special Representative of the President for International Cooperation Erzhan Kazykhan; General Director of Samruk-Kazyna Joint Stock Company Nurlan Zhakupov; Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Vietnam Yerlan Baizhanov; Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development Marat Karabayev; Minister of Culture and Sports Askhat Oralov; Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Energy Company “KazMunayGas” Magzum Mirzagaliyev; Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Railway and Transport Company “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” Nurlan Sauranbayev and a number of other members.

President Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich Tokayev was born on May 17, 1953 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) (1975) and the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation (1992). From 1975 to 1979, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union and was sent to work at the Soviet Embassy in the Republic of Singapore. After an internship at the Beijing Language Institute (1983-1984), he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union (1984-1985), holding the positions of Second Secretary, First Secretary and Counselor at the Soviet Embassy in Beijing (1985-1991). After returning to Kazakhstan, he was appointed to the following positions: Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1992), First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1993), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1994-1999), Deputy Prime Minister (March 1999/October 1999), Prime Minister (October 1999). In January 2002, he resigned and was then re-appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs until January 2007. He held the positions of: Chairman of the Senate (2007-2011); Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) (2008); Director General of the United Nations Office in Geneva, personal representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations at the Conference on Disarmament (March 2011/October 2013); Chairman of the Senate (October 2013/March 2019). From March 2019 to present, he has held the position of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

This is the first time Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has come to Vietnam in his new position, and also the first visit by a Kazakh president in the past 12 years. The visit takes place in the context of the good development of the two countries' relations after 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations. The two countries are facing many opportunities to bring their traditional friendship and bilateral cooperation to new heights. VNA
