(CLO) On January 20, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order delaying by 75 days the implementation of the ban on the short video application TikTok.

TikTok had previously been shut down in the US for several hours on January 19, when the order requiring its parent company ByteDance (China) to sell TikTok due to national security concerns officially took effect.

However, after receiving a delay order from the Trump administration, TikTok was restored to operations on January 20 and thanked the new US President for helping the app continue operating without facing heavy fines.

While the website and app are back in reach, TikTok has not yet returned to the Apple and Google app stores, as the companies are likely awaiting clearer legal guidance from US authorities.

Mr. Trump's executive order requires the US Department of Justice to temporarily suspend the implementation of the ban, and directs the Attorney General to send official notices to major technology companies such as: Apple and Google - two application distribution platforms, and Oracle - the service infrastructure provider for TikTok.

The notice will confirm that no law violations have occurred during the delay period and that the companies will not be liable for continuing to support TikTok.

"We need time to review and determine the appropriate course of action for TikTok," Trump said in the order.

TikTok’s temporary reprieve comes at a time of heightened tensions between the US and China. Trump has previously vowed to impose tariffs on Chinese goods, but has also expressed his desire for more direct dialogue with Chinese President Xi Jinping to find a solution.

“Frankly, we have no choice, we have to save TikTok,” Trump said at a pre-inauguration rally, stressing that his administration was considering a joint venture model between American and Chinese companies that would allow TikTok to continue operating while still ensuring national security interests.

While President Trump’s executive order provides a temporary reprieve for TikTok, its future in the U.S. remains unclear. TikTok representatives expressed optimism and pledged to continue working with the U.S. government to address security concerns.

TikTok's parent company ByteDance has said it has no plans to sell the app but is willing to cooperate to comply with the US government's requests. The Trump administration said it will continue to review the issue comprehensively and thoroughly to ensure US interests.
