Vaccination for livestock and poultry, phase 2

Việt NamViệt Nam11/09/2024

Faced with complicated weather conditions in the last months of the year, which pose a high risk of disease outbreaks in livestock, in order to maintain production and supply of animal food to the market in the last months of the year, from September 1, localities in the province have simultaneously implemented the second round of vaccination in 2024.

Vaccination for livestock and poultry, phase 2 Officers of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine and agricultural officers of Thach Thanh district inspected preparations for the second vaccination campaign for livestock and poultry in 2024.

In the second phase of 2024, Hoang Hoa district will vaccinate 16,030 dogs and cats, 2,775 buffaloes and cows, 7,350 pigs and 283,500 poultry. Because it is being implemented at the time of changing seasons, the district has reviewed and made a list of livestock households to plan, focus on directing and organizing the implementation simultaneously throughout the district according to the correct technical process to proactively prevent and control all types of epidemics.

Accordingly, since August 27, communes and towns have increased propaganda about mandatory subjects, time and regulations on vaccination so that livestock farmers know and strictly comply. In addition, strengthen the steering committee for vaccination and disease prevention and control of livestock and poultry to inspect, urge and notify household owners to proactively confine livestock and poultry and be responsible for capturing and keeping them for vaccination; encourage livestock farmers to vaccinate their livestock themselves. At the same time, fully prepare means, tools and materials for vaccination; build a grassroots veterinary team to ensure quality and quantity to effectively respond to disease prevention and control.

Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoang Hoa district, Le Trong Hoa, said: “From September 5 to 22, vaccination will be carried out for buffaloes, cows, pigs, dogs, and poultry; from September 23 to 30, vaccination will be carried out for the remaining cases. From October to February 2025, localities will carry out additional vaccination for unvaccinated livestock, newly-emerged vaccination areas, and those of vaccination age to ensure that the vaccination rate is always high, in order to ensure immunity for livestock in the entire district.”

Thanh Hoa is always at the top of the country in implementing and carrying out vaccination work, with a high vaccination rate, completing the plan on schedule. However, in reality, the vaccination rate is uneven between the plains and mountainous districts because some households have limited awareness of disease prevention and control, so they do not cooperate in vaccination work. For difficult villages and hamlets, veterinary staff must go to each house to both disseminate and mobilize, and implement vaccination work. However, due to difficult terrain, small-scale livestock farming and a thin veterinary force, the vaccination progress has been significantly affected.

According to the report of the Thanh Hoa Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, from September 1, localities in the province simultaneously deployed the second phase of mandatory vaccination, with the requirement of vaccination rate reaching 90% or more in the plain districts and 80% or more in the midland and mountainous districts. In order to ensure that 100% of livestock and poultry subject to vaccination are vaccinated, the Thanh Hoa Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine has fully prepared vaccines, materials, and tools to supply and organize inspection, supervision, and guidance on vaccination work in districts, towns, and cities. The mountainous districts including Muong Lat, Quan Son, Quan Hoa, Ba Thuoc, Thuong Xuan, Lang Chanh, and Nhu Xuan have also been approved by the Provincial People's Committee for funding to support the second phase of vaccines in 2024.

Vaccination of livestock and poultry in the second phase of 2024 is a premise for stabilizing production, creating livestock products to supply the market at the end of the year, especially during the Lunar New Year, so in order to complete 100% of the plan, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development requires districts, towns and cities to strengthen propaganda about the benefits of vaccination against livestock diseases and vaccination plans to livestock households. In addition, in addition to the main vaccination rounds, additional vaccinations must be carried out continuously and the number of newly vaccinated livestock that are of vaccination age; localities need to closely follow the area, urge and speed up the vaccination progress; balance the budget, fully prepare means, tools, supplies and chemicals for vaccination work...

For mountainous districts, it is necessary to review and accurately count the total livestock and poultry herd, arrange local reserve funds to support vaccines for poor and near-poor households; arrange veterinary staff to remote villages and hamlets to guide and support people in vaccination. However, in order for the second vaccination campaign in 2024 to achieve high results, in addition to the direction from the agricultural sector, local authorities, and efforts from veterinary forces, livestock farmers must also be proactive and self-conscious in fully vaccinating their livestock according to regulations.
