To put that into perspective, the bonus that Georgia received from their former Prime Minister was even higher than the cash prize that the Euro 2024 champions received from the European Football Federation, which was £6.8 million (not counting the accumulated match bonuses on the way to the final).
This is the first time that the "tiny" team from a country that split from the Soviet Union (former Soviet Union) has qualified for a Euro finals and they have done more than that by passing the group stage with a very convincing performance.
Georgia started Euro 2024 with a 1-3 loss to Türkiye. However, they then held the Czech Republic to a 1-1 draw and in the final group stage match, the team led by French coach Willy Sagnol surprisingly defeated Portugal with a 2-0 victory.
Excited by the team's incredible achievement, former Prime Minister and the richest man in Georgia, Bidzina Ivanishvil, decided to immediately reward the entire team with 8.4 million pounds. Not only that, this football-loving politician also announced that he would double the above bonus if Georgia defeated Spain in the match in the early morning of July 1st in the round of 16.
Former prime minister and billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili is currently the honorary chairwoman of the Georgian Dream party and has a net worth of £4.75bn. Ivanishvili also heads the Cartu Foundation, an organisation known for its charitable work in the Caucasus region.
A statement from the office of Georgia's top political organisation read: "We have decided to award 30 million GEL (£8.4m) to the national team. According to the initiative of Bidzina Ivanishvilli, if Georgia wins the round of 16 and advances to the quarter-finals, the team will receive another 30 million GEL. We thank the players and coaching staff for bringing Georgian fans this historic dream victory."
