Billionaire Elon Musk on November 10 endorsed Republican Senator Rick Scott to become majority leader in the US Senate.
Republicans are expected to hold at least 52 seats in the 100-member US Senate after winning three seats previously held by Democrats in West Virginia, Ohio and Montana in the 2024 US election.
Current Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has announced he will step down as leader after the election. McConnell has led the Republican Party in the Senate since 2007.
Billionaire Elon Musk endorses another politician
"Rick Scott for Senate Majority Leader!" Musk tweeted on November 10. Musk has emerged as a major supporter of Republican presidential candidate and former US President Donald Trump in the 2024 US election and is now considered an ally of President-elect Trump.
Mr. Musk is the richest person in the world, and Mr. Scott, who represents Florida in the Senate, is the richest sitting senator, according to Reuters.
Senator Rick Scott speaks during a discussion in Doral, Florida, on October 22.
In an interview with Fox News on November 10, Mr. Scott said that the US Senate needs to make real changes. "We can't keep doing what we're doing. That's why Mr. Trump was elected to do, to make a change," Mr. Scott emphasized.
Mr Scott has the support of some far-right Republican senators, but it remains to be seen whether he can bring moderate Republicans to his side.
Each party will vote for its leader in the US Senate in January, after senators are sworn in to the new Congress. Whoever wins the Republican leadership of the Senate will succeed Democrat Chuck Schumer as majority leader.
Meanwhile, control of the US House of Representatives is still undecided. Republicans have won 214 seats, just four short of the 218 needed to maintain their current majority, while Democrats have won 205 seats, according to CNN.
If Republicans lead both chambers, that means most of President-elect Trump's agenda will be much more likely to win congressional approval than if Democrats control either chamber.
Partial results show Republicans holding narrow leads in nine remaining undecided House races and Democrats leading in seven, though thousands of votes remain to be counted, according to an analysis by The New York Times .
Most of the remaining House seats are in western states, where vote counting typically takes longer than elsewhere in the country, according to Reuters.
