Hylo Open is part of the Super 300 system. Last year Thuy Linh reached the finals, so she is seeded fourth in this year's tournament.
In the first round, she met Rachael Darragh of the Republic of Ireland, ranked 81st in the world. Against an underdog opponent, Thuy Linh quickly took the lead with flexible movements, controlling the shuttlecock, dropping the ball, then hitting the net to hit the shuttlecock accurately.
