World No. 15 Kim Ga-eun just won two matches easily to reach the quarterfinals, including a 2-0 victory over Japanese world No. 16 Aya Ohori. As soon as she entered the match with Thuy Linh, the Korean player attacked continuously and led 6-2.
Only then did Thuy Linh regain her competitive spirit and improve her defensive ability. The Vietnamese player had defensive shots far from the net and made difficult returns, confusing Kim, who then scored seven consecutive points to lead 9-6. Thuy Linh had a moment of leading 14-10 but suddenly ran out of steam, made many mistakes and lost the advantage. When the score was tied at 19-19, she hit out in the decisive situation, then lost to her opponent's good serve.
In the second set, Kim completely dominated the game with her ability to control the shuttlecock. Thuy Linh lost strength and could no longer keep up with her opponent's speed. After a 5-5 draw, the Korean player created a series of five points, then two series of four points to end with a 21-10 victory.
Despite the defeat, Thuy Linh still made an impression when she entered the quarterfinals of a Super 750 tournament for the first time. She also created the most shocking victory since the beginning of the tournament when she eliminated Spanish world number 5 Carolina Marin in the first round.
This achievement helps Thuy Linh to definitely return to the world top 20 after three weeks of being knocked out. The 26-year-old tennis player will be added 6,050 points and a bonus of 4,675 USD, equivalent to 113 million VND.
