(PLVN) - On the afternoon of December 6, the Department of Crop Production, Vietnam Gardening Association, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoa Binh province and related units coordinated with Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper to organize the Forum "Improving quality, value chain and promoting consumption of fruit tree products in the Northern provinces".
According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry is firmly asserting its position in the international market. Fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first 11 months of 2024 reached 6.66 billion USD, an increase of 28.2% over the same period in 2023, the highest level ever, with key products such as durian, dragon fruit, banana, jackfruit and mango.
It is forecasted that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports in 2024 could reach 7.2 billion USD, of which fruit exports could exceed 6.5 billion USD.
The northern provinces, with favorable soil and climate, have the potential to strongly develop fruit trees such as lychee, longan, orange, grapefruit, plum, peach, etc. Currently, Vietnam has opened its market for 19 types of agricultural products of plant origin and fresh fruit for official export to major markets such as China, the United States, South Korea, Japan, the EU and Australia.
Mr. Dinh Cong Su - Vice Chairman of Hoa Binh Provincial People's Committee. |
At the forum, Mr. Dinh Cong Su, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Binh province, said that with diverse climate, land and soil conditions, Hoa Binh has the potential to develop many types of crops, especially fruit trees. Currently, the province has 16,000 hectares of fruit trees, mainly including oranges, grapefruits, lemons, longans, bananas, etc.
Identifying fruit trees as a key industry in economic development, Hoa Binh has implemented many policies and strategies such as renovating mixed gardens, attracting investment in agriculture, implementing a project to replant citrus trees, and promoting trade promotion activities. All these efforts are focused on the goal of improving the quality of agricultural value chains and avoiding rapid development.
According to statistics, the province has 88 growing area codes, of which 53 codes are for export. More than 2,400 hectares of fruit trees have been granted safety certificates such as GlobalGAP, VietGAP and organic. The province's main products, such as bananas, oranges and grapefruits, are currently being consumed stably in supermarkets and major cities, and are also officially exported to markets such as the United States, Canada and the EU.
However, according to Mr. Su, the development of fruit trees in the province still has some limitations, especially the goal of increasing added value is not clear. Most products are mainly consumed fresh due to difficulties in preservation and processing, leading to production value not reaching expectations.
At the forum, agencies, associations, localities, businesses and cooperatives proposed solutions for sustainable development of fruit trees in the northern provinces. At the same time, the parties also updated the progress of market opening and technical requirements of some markets for fruit tree products, introduced integrated pest management processes and solutions for preliminary processing, processing and post-harvest preservation of fruit and vegetable products.
