Nearly 3 km of parallel road running along Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway opens to traffic

After 6 years of implementation, a part of the road parallel to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway opened to traffic on the morning of September 17, helping to reduce traffic congestion at the eastern gateway of the city.

The road section opened to traffic is nearly 3 km long, 20 m wide, 4 lanes, connecting from Nguyen Thi Dinh route through Nam Rach Chiec residential area to Do Xuan Hop street, Thu Duc city. This section includes the construction of Ba Dat bridge, Muong Kenh, along with a synchronous system of sidewalks, lighting, and drainage.

The above-mentioned project is part of the project to build a parallel expressway with a total length of nearly 4 km, connecting Mai Chi Tho Avenue to Ring Road 2, which was opened to traffic first. The remaining part, nearly 700 m long, connecting Do Xuan Hop Street to Ring Road 2, has not been completed due to land clearance and project adjustment procedures.

Started in 2017, the parallel route of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway was implemented under a BT (build - transfer) contract, with a total capital previously estimated at nearly VND870 billion, pending an update. The project is expected to be completed in 24 months, helping to reduce traffic pressure at the An Phu intersection and speed up investment in resettlement projects for the Thu Thiem New Urban Area. However, the project's progress has been delayed due to land acquisition and payment procedures.

According to Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport Phan Cong Bang, the nearly 3 km of the completed project will help reduce congestion at the eastern gateway of the city, especially when the An Phu intersection project is simultaneously implementing many packages. The route creates a new road axis to help share the traffic through the area instead of all going to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay elevated road.

"The opening of the parallel road will support traffic organization, help contractors to construct conveniently, and speed up the construction progress of An Phu intersection," Mr. Bang said, asking relevant departments and Thu Duc City to promptly resolve procedures to adjust the BT contract and clear the site so that investors can complete the remaining section of the road in 2024.

After the route is put into operation, cars, motorbikes, and passenger vans with less than 16 seats will run in both directions from Do Xuan Hop to Nguyen Thi Dinh. Only motorbikes will be allowed on the section from Nguyen Thi Dinh to Mai Chi Tho.

In addition to the above project, Ho Chi Minh City has recently put into operation a number of key traffic projects such as Long Kieng Bridge (Nha Be District), Vam Sat 2 (Can Gio) to help increase traffic connections at the gateways. Many projects such as Nam Ly Bridge, Tang Long Bridge, expansion of Luong Dinh Cua Street, Tan Ky Tan Quy Street... are being re-implemented after a long delay due to land acquisition problems.
