What is the difference between an ID card and a citizen ID card?

The concept of "identity" creates many questions and confusion when both identity cards and citizen identification cards appear.

Specifically, on November 27, 2023, the National Assembly issued the Law on Identification No. 26/2023/QH15, officially changing the name of the identity document from citizen identification card (CCCD) to identity card and will be applied from July 1, 2024.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, this change is in line with international practice because many countries in the world use ID cards for their citizens. Therefore, the card change aims to ensure universality, creating a premise for international integration.

In addition, changing the name to ID card will also be more comprehensive in terms of subjects and scope of regulation. Because the citizen ID card is only issued to Vietnamese citizens and when talking about citizen ID, it is talking about types of information related to that person's personality.

Citizenship card has many advantages over citizen identification card.

However, the ID card is also applicable to both Vietnamese citizens and citizens of Vietnamese origin living in Vietnam or people of undetermined nationality.

At the same time, the encryption part of the ID card also integrates information about the father, mother, wife, husband, children, legal representative, and the person represented by that person, including information about the last name, middle name and first name, personal identification number, 9-digit ID number, and nationality.

Therefore, leaving the citizen identification card is no longer suitable because the citizen identification card is only the personal information of that citizen, while the ID card also integrates the information of relatives in the QR code of the ID card.

All information on the ID card is specific, detailed and integrated with more modern technology on the citizen ID card and brings many outstanding features that are more useful to citizens such as:

- Covers more citizen information than the current Citizen Identification Card.

- Convenient for people when using information in the ID card.

- Includes a lot of personal, characteristic information about people, helping to easily distinguish one person from another.

- Still keeping the QR code, integrating a lot of citizen information with many types of documents to help people not have to carry too many documents when performing administrative procedures as well as saving time, money, effort... to preserve and use other types of documents.
