Teacher Nguyen Xuan Khang decided to spend 6-12 billion VND to support 30 pedagogical students, to solve the shortage of English teachers in Meo Vac district.

On November 25, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang, Principal of Marie Curie School, Hanoi, signed a commitment to support the training of 30 English teachers for Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province, through recruitment and socialization.

Accordingly, the district People's Committee recruits students to study English at university, then accepts them back after graduation. Meanwhile, Marie Curie University grants a minimum scholarship of 5 million VND per month to each student for 4 years, starting in December. The support money is transferred directly to the student's account. The total cost to "feed" 30 students is expected to be about 6-12 billion VND.

"The project will create a long-term source of English teachers for Meo Vac district, fundamentally solving the problem of teacher shortage," said Mr. Khang.

Mr. Khang said the relationship between Marie Curie School and Meo Vac district began in 2021, from the national project to plant one billion trees and the school planted twenty thousand Sa Moc trees in Khau Vai commune of this district.

Next, teachers and students of Marie Curie School supported textbooks, stories, and school supplies for several schools in Meo Vac. Mr. Bui Van Thu, Head of the District Education and Training Department, shared at that time that the entire district had more than 2,600 third-grade students but only one primary school English teacher. Meanwhile, from the 2022-2023 school year, the whole country will implement a new general education program with third-grade students having to study four English periods a week.

Mr. Khang also had many concerns about Mr. Thu. He then recruited 22 teachers to teach English online to all 3rd grade students in Meo Vac. The project started in September 2022 and will continue until the students finish primary school.

However, Mr. Khang thought, "If this batch of students finishes in three years, will I do anything more for Meo Vac?"

"I came up with the idea of training local people to become English teachers for long-term teaching. Doing this will solve the problem of teacher shortage at its root," said Mr. Khang about the project proposal to "feed" 30 English students for the district.

The first 9 students from the University of Science and University of Foreign Languages (Thai Nguyen University), Hanoi Pedagogical University, University of Natural Resources and Environment, and National Academy of Public Administration have signed a commitment to receive support from Marie Curie and will teach English in Meo Vac after graduation.

Teacher Khang said, "If you and your family agree, Teacher Khang will accept you as his children. He will provide you with food, accommodation, and education. After you finish your studies, you will return to your hometown to teach. I wish you all good studies, worthy of the trust and love of your family, teachers, and myself."

Chao Thi Xuan, from Xin Cai commune, Meo Vac district, a second-year student of the English Language Department, University of Science, Thai Nguyen University, was moved by Mr. Khang's sharing.

Born into a family of 9 siblings, her father died early, witnessing her mother's hardships, Xuan nurtured her dream of becoming a teacher since grade 6. At that time, the female student really liked learning English and wanted children in her hometown to also learn a foreign language.

"The support and encouragement from Mr. Khang will help me have more motivation to study hard and fulfill my dream," Xuan said.

Mr. Ngo Manh Cuong, Vice Chairman of Meo Vac District People's Committee, expressed his deep gratitude for the support of Marie Curie School and committed to implementing the project in accordance with regulations.

Representatives of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Giang and Hanoi also highly appreciated this idea, hoping that the project would achieve sustainable results, spread to many localities, and contribute to solving the shortage of teachers.
