According to information from the leader of the People's Committee of Ham Thuan Bac District, a group of students living in Ham Phu Commune (Ham Thuan Bac District) went swimming together in the Song Quao Canal in the afternoon of the same day. The four female students who drowned were: Tran Thi Thuy K. (11 years old), Dang Thi Song T. (8 years old), Ta Thi Le S. (11 years old) and Tran Thi BY (11 years old, all living in Ham Phu Commune, Ham Thuan Bac District). They were all students of Ham Phu Primary School (Ham Thuan Bac District).
People searched the Song Quao canal for children.
According to initial information, it was hot, a group of students (about 10 children) invited each other to go swimming in the Song Quao canal and were swept away by the water. One boy returned to the village to call for help but it was too late.
Upon receiving the news that the children were in an accident, the commune police and local people split up to search and discovered the victims drifting hundreds of meters downstream due to strong water currents.
Many local people were surprised by the children's deaths.
Song Quao Canal is a canal starting from Song Quao irrigation lake, irrigating the fields of communes in the downstream of Ham Thuan Bac district.
In the evening of the same day, the authorities of Ham Thuan Bac district brought the bodies of the drowned female students back to their families for funeral arrangements. The authorities are also investigating the cause of the heartbreaking incident.
