With more than 50% of the votes counted, US President Joe Biden has won in South Carolina (with a support rate of more than 96%), where the first official Democratic primary is taking place to choose a candidate for the election next November.
Marianne Williamson and Dean Phillips won just 2.0% and 1.6%, respectively. The victories came after President Biden backed the unprecedented move to make South Carolina the first Democratic state to vote ahead of New Hampshire, part of his effort to promote a diverse voice in the party’s early primaries due to South Carolina’s much larger population than New Hampshire.
Although President Biden won the New Hampshire primary on January 23, he did not receive any actual delegates in that state because the Democratic Party did not formally accept that election. As a result, the victory in South Carolina was the first official victory for the incumbent president in a primary.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has defeated his rivals in the first Republican nomination race in 2024, setting the stage for a rematch with incumbent President Biden. The deciding issue in the race between Trump and President Biden, according to recent polls, may just be the “health” of the US economy. According to an ABC News/Ipsos poll in November 2023, 74% of Americans said the economy was very important to them, making it the top concern for voters.
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are at odds on issues that have a profound impact on Americans’ finances, including taxes, jobs and trade. Biden has sought to raise taxes on the wealthy and some large corporations, framing it as an effort to make the tax code fairer. Trump appears to want to reverse that policy by cutting taxes, which he sees as a catalyst for economic growth.
