"Phong Trieu" ceremony to open Va Temple festival
The festival at Va Temple Festival 2025 includes traditional folk games: Chinese chess, water puppetry, art festival, blindfolded ball hitting, rice cooking competition, sack race, tug of war and football tournament to celebrate the Party and Spring...
Va Temple, also known as Dong Cung, is located in Trung Hung Ward, Son Tay Town (Hanoi City). The temple is considered one of the four palaces of Xu Doai, worshiping Tan Vien Son Thanh, the leading god of the four immortals of Vietnamese folk beliefs.
The temple is located on an ancient lim tree hill, shaped like a turtle swimming towards the rising sun. Surrounding the temple to the west are long hills, to the north is the winding Tich River. In the distance, boldly imprinted on the blue sky, towers the towering Ba Vi mountain, surrounded by white clouds all year round.
Va Temple is not only a historical and cultural architectural work created by our ancestors, but also a spiritual museum of an ancient cultural region.
In many legends, the story of Saint Tan fighting natural disasters and floods, rescuing people, helping people dig wells to get water, teaching people to make fire, pull nets, set traps, leading troops to fight against enemies or singing and dancing to celebrate festivals... has been passed down and worshiped by generations of people in the Xu Doai region.
Under the ancient feudal dynasties, Va Temple was awarded 18 royal decrees by kings. In 1964, Va Temple was ranked as a National Historical Relic. In 2016, Va Temple Festival was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the thousand-year-old lim forest was recognized as a Vietnamese heritage tree.

The Va Temple Festival dates back to the 18th century and is still held twice a year in spring and autumn. Every three years, Va Temple holds a major festival in the years of the Rat, Horse, Cat, and Rooster.
The Va Temple Festival and other festivals in the region preserve many ancient rituals and customs, containing many cultural sediments of an ancient land. Therefore, the Va Temple Festival is famous throughout the country for its scale, as well as its spiritual value for many generations. Folklore still tells the song: "No matter who goes to worship in a hundred regions, it is not as good as praying in January at Va Temple...".
