Son Heung-min becomes Tottenham captain

Striker Son Heung-min is the first Asian player to be given the captain's armband in the Premier League.

Son was named Tottenham captain, replacing Harry Kane, who recently moved to Bayern. The two vice-captains will be centre-back Cristian Romero and new midfielder James Maddison. Coach Ange Postecoglou's decision has been widely supported by fans, who believe the trio are suitable to lead Tottenham in the post-Kane era.

"It's an honour and a pride to be the captain of the club," Son said after being handed the armband on August 12. "It's a big surprise. I told the players that everyone should feel like a captain. It's a new season, a new start and I will give everything for this shirt and this armband."

Son is no stranger to the captaincy, having captained the South Korean national team for many years. "I think Son will show leadership qualities," Coach Postecoglou said of his 31-year-old student. "He is almost a bridge for the whole team."

2023-2024 is Son's ninth season at Tottenham. He was the Premier League's top scorer in the 2020-2021 season with 23 goals. Last season, Son became the first Asian player to reach 100 goals in the league.

Son will wear the Tottenham captain's armband for the first time, when the team visits Brentford in the opening round of the Premier League at 8pm today, August 13.
