The number of students studying math and science in English in Ho Chi Minh City increased from 600 to more than 30,000.

(Dan Tri) - In 10 years, the number of students studying integrated math, science and English under Project 5659 of Ho Chi Minh City increased from 600 to more than 30,000 students, more than 50 times.


5 students in Ho Chi Minh City achieved the highest scores in the world

The above information was shared by Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City at the conference to review 10 years of implementing Project 5695: Project on teaching and learning math, science and English integrating the English and Vietnamese programs (integrated English).

"In the first year, the new program was implemented in 18 schools in 3 districts with 600 students participating. By the 2023-2024 school year, it had been implemented in 160 schools in 20 districts with over 30,000 students.

This shows that the need to learn English combined with scientific knowledge subjects is increasing," the Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City shared.

Mr. Quoc said that the learning outcomes of students participating in Project 5695 are always high, especially in math and science. The percentage of students achieving excellent scores in periodic and final exams in math and science in English is always 85%-90%.

The percentage of students taking the Pearson Edexcel international certificate exam with an average Pass result in the three subjects of English, math and science over 10 years is 86% in primary school, 92% in secondary school and 96% in high school.

The project has helped many students achieve high results in international academic exams. Most notably, 5 students achieved the highest scores in the world in the Pearson Edexcel international certificate exams, 41 students were awarded the highest scores nationwide by the Pearson Edexcel International Examination Board, and 119 students received the excellent student award.

Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc also informed that most students, upon completing the program at all levels, achieved the corresponding level according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework of the Ministry of Education and Training, equivalent to the levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Premise for making English a second language in schools

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong assessed that Project 5695 of Ho Chi Minh City has implemented very specific goals of Resolution 29, bringing positive and sustainable results.

This shows that the project was implemented promptly and on target, demonstrating the vision, strategy, and agility of the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City. The project shows the correct and accurate advice, determination, and daring to think, dare to do, and dare to make breakthroughs of the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.

Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong suggested that Ho Chi Minh City continue to consider, from the experience of implementing math and science in English, to research and expand other subjects under possible conditions.

Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that the implementation of Project 5695 in Ho Chi Minh City is one of the experiences to replicate and learn from. He proposed that the Ministry of Education and Training replicate this model to other provinces and cities.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Lan, General Director of EMG Education, said that the achievements over the past 10 years have proven that Project 5695 is truly a solid foundation for making English the second language in schools.

According to Ms. Lan, the project achieved the above results because it ensured four key things: a consistent, effective and successful "four-house" cooperation model; a team of excellent teachers; building a high-quality, international-standard, advanced technology application program framework; building a practical English application environment, learning anytime, anywhere, not just limited to classroom hours.

In which, the "four-house" model including managers, schools, businesses and learners (parents) has shown outstanding effectiveness in integrating English into teaching core subjects such as math and science in English.

In addition, the team of highly qualified teachers, building a practical English application environment, regularly improving technology in the teaching process such as 3D models, Virtual Experiments virtual labs, Metaverse-based classrooms... help students access modern educational materials and technology.

According to Ms. Lan, this is the foundation for the project to create a sustainable educational model, suitable for Vietnam's conditions and meeting the trend of international integration. Students are not only good at knowledge but also confident in communicating and working in English, ready to compete fairly with international friends.
