A group of students from the School of Medicine and Pharmacy (CMP, Duy Tan University) won second prize at the Smile Code Scientific Research Competition with a solution on surgical wound models.
Three students from the Faculty of Dentistry, including Tran Gia Bao (Phu Yen), Le Thi Thuy Duong (Thanh Hoa), and Hoang Gia Khanh (Quang Binh) chose the topic "Research and evaluation of wound suture models in oral and maxillofacial surgery practice" with the product DTUSimSkin. The group representing Duy Tan University received many positive reviews for its creativity, necessity, and practical applicability.

Student Le Thi Thuy Duong shared that based on a survey at a number of medical training institutions across the country on the use of wound suture models, the quality and durability of the models,... the group found many limitations. The three members chose this topic to carry out with the desire to take advantage of local resources, thereby, manufacturing domestic wound suture models at competitive prices.
"The team created high-quality wound suture models with many good characteristics such as ensuring realistic morphology, anatomical structure, elasticity, tensile strength and high durability after surveying experts and students, and at the same time, comparing them with other products," the female student added.

According to experts, the creation and improvement of wound suturing simulation models is an urgent need, because in Vietnam there are not many good quality domestic products with competitive prices. Therefore, a group of students from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy created the product DTUSimSkin to create conditions for learners to practice more, at the same time, contributing to improving the quality of teaching and health care for patients, ensuring financial efficiency in planning teaching and practice equipment.
The three members received support from staff and lecturers from the Medical Simulation Practice Center (MedSIM) and the Faculty of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of Duy Tan University in analyzing the model's characteristics, the necessary conditions for making the skin, and connecting with specialists to ask for comments. In addition, the team designed the product's parts with a 3D mold on the computer, printed the upper part and logo with a 3D printer, and created the bottom of the mold with a laser cutter to cut mica sheets, skin pieces, etc. at the STEM Center and Fab Lab of the school.
Currently, DTUSimSkin products have been put into experimental teaching in the wound suture practice subjects of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry - Maxillofacial Surgery at CMP. Doctor Nguyen Hoang Quynh Mai (Faculty of Dentistry - Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Medicine and Pharmacy) said that during the time of accompanying and guiding science, she realized that the group of students researching and designing DTUSimSkin products had a passion for research, discipline and perseverance, and at the same time, were always creative in the working process.
"The result of winning second prize in a large-scale competition is a worthy reward for the students," affirmed Dr. Mai.
Previously, Gia Bao, Thuy Duong and Gia Khanh had achieved many other achievements when working together, including: Second prize at the Student Forum - Continuing Education Scientific Conference and the 8th Dental Exhibition organized by the Vietnam Dental Association; Encouragement prize at the 2023 Science and Technology Award for Students of the Ministry of Education and Training, First prize at the Student Scientific Research Conference of the School of Medicine and Pharmacy (Duy Tan University)...
The three young people are all passionate about studying to become dentists. Gia Bao shared that he is very happy to have chosen the right major that suits his personality, requiring meticulousness and high patience. Gia Khanh also studies this major with the desire to contribute to improving the oral health of himself and everyone around him. Meanwhile, Thuy Duong is fond of the saying "You will find the true value of life, if you smile!" and hopes that she can help everyone have a brighter, more confident smile.
The Smile Code contest is part of the 13th International Conference on Dentistry and Maxillofacial Science and Training, co-organized by Hanoi Medical University and the Institute of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Training, from November 22 to 24. Here, experts, doctors, lecturers... share about modern technical technologies and advanced materials that can be effectively applied in training activities, scientific research, and dental, maxillofacial health care for the community.
With the theme "Multidisciplinary approach in modern dentistry", speakers from the US, Germany, Japan, Korea, India, Thailand, Vietnam... presented more than 50 reports on implants, orthodontics, periodontics, occlusion, pediatric dentistry, aesthetics or endodontics.
