Scholes: 'Fernandes made two stupid mistakes'

Turkey Former player Paul Scholes held midfielder Bruno Fernandes responsible for Man Utd's 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in the Champions League.

"I know in the post-match interview, Bruno Fernandes talked about the team's mistakes. But he himself made two stupid mistakes that led to two goals," Scholes told TNT Sports on the evening of November 29. "The whole team, including the captain, have to take responsibility. It was a game they had to win."

Scholes also accused Man Utd's defence of being disorganised and goalkeeper Andre Onana of making mistakes that led directly to the two goals. These mistakes made the match difficult for the "Red Devils", despite leading by two goals on two occasions.

Man Utd started the match impressively. Within 18 minutes, they were 2-0 up thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Fernandes. However, after a foul by Fernandes in the 29th minute, Hakim Ziyech scored a free kick to reduce the gap for Galatasaray. In this situation, the Chelsea star aimed for the far corner, while goalkeeper Onana guessed the near corner and was unable to react in time.

After Scott McTominay cushioned the ball to make it 3-1, Man Utd continued to make mistakes. In the 62nd minute, from a foul by Fernandes, Ziyech once again scored a free kick. Onana made a big mistake when he pushed the ball into the goal, instead of lying down to hold the ball. In the 71st minute, after Man Utd's midfield failed to put pressure on, Ziyech was free to pass the ball to Kerem Akturkoglu to equalize 3-3.

After Fernandes' first foul, former player Robbie Savage praised the Man Utd captain for his defensive ability from distance on TNT Sports after the first foul. However, Ziyech's subsequent free-kick goal left Savage in the firing line.

"Savage flattered Fernandes when he knocked down a Galatasaray player on the edge of the box, only for Man Utd to concede a goal," a fan wrote on social network X.

Another account claimed that they had never seen a commentator like Savage because he praised Fernandes for dropping back, committing a foul and conceding a goal.

In his post-match interview, Fernandes admitted that Man Utd made many mistakes. He said the team should have finished the match early, but instead they let the opponent score and the result was bad. "I don't want to be too negative, but what we did in the Champions League was not enough," Fernandes said. "We should have controlled the game all the time. This is not the first game we have had this situation."

After the draw in Turkey, Man Utd have little chance of staying in the Champions League. The "Red Devils" are at the bottom of Group A, with four points after five matches, one point behind Copenhagen and Galatasaray. In this group, with 13 points, Bayern have already won the ticket to the next round and the top position. In the final round, Man Utd need to beat Bayern, and hope that the match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray ends in a draw.
