Unlike the devastation caused by landslides and wave erosion as before, Cua Dai beach now stretches a long stretch of fine white sand. Although it has not completely regained its "shape" as before, the current state has somewhat brought great joy to the government, residents and tourists, as efforts to prevent landslides have yielded positive results.
Cua Dai Beach used to be one of the 25 most beautiful beaches in Asia. However, since 2014, this area has been eroded by the sea, with waves "swallowing" and washing away hundreds of meters of land each year. In addition, many coastal resorts have been abandoned due to lack of beaches.
To save Cua Dai beach, in 2020, Quang Nam provincial authorities started building a wave-reducing dyke over 220m long, half a meter below sea level, running parallel to and 250m from the shore with a total cost of 40 billion VND. The project was completed and put into use before the 2020 storm season, contributing to limiting erosion.
In July 2021, the emergency anti-erosion project of Cua Dai beach was deployed with a length of more than 1.5 km, with a total investment of 300 billion VND. In addition, the area from the underground breakwater to the shore was also pumped with sand to nourish the beach, increasing the ability to protect the Hoi An coast. After pumping more than 600,000m3 of sand, Cua Dai beach (more than 600m long, about 200m wide from the shore to the edge of the sea) was gradually restored.
Currently, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province has decided to continue to restore the southern and northern sections of Cua Dai beach, which are seriously eroding. A total of 3 projects have been completed and will be implemented in the near future to restore Cua Dai beach with a capital of about 1,500 billion VND.
Remote wave-blocking embankment helps Cua Dai beach limit erosion
Ms. Le Thi Hoai An (32 years old, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City) said that about 3 years ago, when traveling to Hoi An, her family often went to Cua Dai beach to play. However, at that time, Cua Dai beach was heavily eroded, making her feel very "shocked". "Coming back this time, the beach has a completely different appearance, it seems that the coast is beautiful again as if the erosion and sedimentation had never happened", Ms. An shared.
Young tourists playing on the white sand
After a period of serious erosion and landslides, the coast is now being “revived”. Looking at the hundreds of meters of fine white sand forming, many locals and tourists are very happy to be able to swim in the sea again after a long time.
