A scientific workshop on active ingredients and medicinal herbs that support cancer prevention was held by the Vietnam Functional Food Association today, September 14.
At the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoang, Vice President of the Vietnam Functional Food Association, said that in recent years, the total market value of Vietnam's functional foods reached about 13 billion USD, double the total market value of the pharmaceutical market.
Cancer patients do not use functional foods instead of medicine.
In our country, the rate of people using functional foods is increasing rapidly, currently 80% of the population uses them. More than 60% of users use domestically produced products.
Evaluations at some medical facilities show that medicinal herbs and biological active ingredients play a very good role in enhancing immunity, supporting anti-oxidation, fighting free radicals, preventing cancer, supporting health recovery to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in cancer treatment... Some of these medicinal herbs and biological active ingredients are being researched, developed and applied by domestic enterprises in public health care.
Resolution 36-NQ/TW of the Politburo in 2023 on the development and application of biotechnology to serve the country's sustainable development stated: developing the biotechnology industry into an important economic-technical sector is a priority solution in socio-economic development; taking enterprises as the main subjects, having outstanding mechanisms and policies to create the most favorable conditions for economic sectors, especially the private economy, to invest in the development of the biotechnology industry.
Promote the application of biotechnology in the medical field. Focus on research and production of drugs and vaccines to meet the needs of medical examination, treatment and disease prevention and control; research on stem cell technology in the pharmaceutical industry, gene technology, production of raw materials and biological drugs, and functional foods derived from herbs.
According to Mr. Hoang, although the demand for functional foods and dietary supplements is very high, most people buy them based on advertisements. There are even cases where people believe in advertisements and use functional foods instead of medicine. This is a mistake because this product only has the effect of supplementing and supporting treatment.
At the workshop, experts, scientists and business representatives discussed and answered many questions from participants to clarify the scientific basis, mechanism of action and especially the application and use of medicinal herbs and biological active ingredients in the practical development of health care products in Vietnam.
