Most fruits and vegetables are grown outdoors, which means they can be touched by bugs, insects, and birds. This means that in addition to dirt, unwashed fruits and vegetables can contain many other potentially harmful substances, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and pesticides, according to The Conversation (Australia).

One of the simplest and most effective ways is to rub the fruit with your hands and then rinse it under running water.

Furthermore, contaminants can also be introduced during packaging, processing or storage. In addition, even plants grown hydroponically in greenhouses can still contain bacteria and pesticides. .

To properly wash fruits and vegetables, the first thing to do is to wash your hands. This helps prevent bacteria on your skin from contaminating fruits and vegetables. The simplest and safest way to wash fresh fruits and vegetables is by hand, under running water.

Use your hands to rub the surface of fruits and vegetables to remove dirt, pesticides and some bacteria on the surface. Wash until the surface is no longer dirty. If you intend to soak them in water, use a clean basin, pot or bowl, avoid soaking them in the sink because this is a place full of bacteria.

Experts recommend not washing fruits and vegetables with detergents, soaps or commercial cleaners. Because the skins of some plants are porous, they can absorb these chemicals. As a result, not only does it change the flavor and texture of the plants, but it also makes them unsafe to eat.

Some methods have been scientifically proven to be safe and effective for washing fruits and vegetables. For example, vinegar and baking soda can both be used to wash fresh fruits and vegetables. They are effective in reducing bacteria and pesticide levels.

For vinegar washing, we can use distilled malt vinegar, apple cider vinegar or wine vinegar. The ratio of the solution is half a cup of vinegar to 1 cup of water. Fruits and vegetables only need to be soaked in this solution for about 2 to 3 minutes, then rinsed with cold water for at least 1 minute.

For baking soda, people need to mix the solution with a ratio of about 0.8 grams of baking soda in 100 ml of water. Soaking for 15 minutes with baking soda can help remove almost all pesticides from fresh fruits and vegetables, according to The Conversation.
