Accordingly, Mr. Nguyen TK (residing in Hoa Tho Dong ward, Cam Le district, Da Nang city) discovered damage to the lower lobe of his left lung by chance when going for a general health check-up. The patient said that 20 years ago, he had pneumonia, which was treated well and now he often has pain in his left back.

On the chest CT scan, the chest vascular reconstruction showed a lesion located in the lower lobe of the left lung, measuring 32x45mm, with blood vessels directly supplying from the thoracic aorta with a diameter of about 11mm and venous blood draining directly into the left lower pulmonary vein.

The patient was diagnosed with pulmonary sequestration in the lower lobe of the left lung.

The patient's other tests were within normal limits. The patient was scheduled for isolated pneumonectomy.

The team of doctors from the Thoracic Surgery Department performed surgery to remove an isolated lung using a two-port thoracoscopic technique to help minimize chest wall trauma for the patient.

Elderly patients, at risk of arterial wall damage, increased risk of bleeding should require absolute caution.

After 2 hours, thanks to the meticulousness and good coordination of the surgical team, the doctors successfully removed the isolated lung mass and part of the parenchyma of the left lung lobe, preserving as much of the remaining lung parenchyma of the lower lobe as possible instead of removing an entire lobe.

According to specialist II Doctor Than Trong Vu, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, who directly performed the surgery on the patient, this case was quite challenging because the isolated pulmonary artery was large.

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital condition, accounting for 0.1% of congenital lung lesions. The condition is diagnosed in infancy.

In adults, the diagnosis of pulmonary sequestration is rarely recorded. The progression of pulmonary sequestration can lead to recurrent pneumonia, lung abscess, cancer, life-threatening severe bleeding, heart failure due to increased cardiac output...

The patient's health is currently stable.
