THE ranks universities based on five key metrics and a total of 18 indicators. RMIT has made significant progress in four of the 18 indicators in this year's global rankings, including: Teaching (learning environment - up 102 places); Research environment (up 36 places); Research citations (up 207 places); Industry engagement (up 104 places).

Experts say the key to improving RMIT's performance is promoting the quality of teaching and research, as well as better results in measures of the scale, quality, impact and income of research activities.

RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron said the improvement in industry engagement was largely due to the new patenting metric, reflecting the university’s research excellence and innovation.

“This is a fantastic result for RMIT, reflecting how we are continuing to enhance our reputation for quality and excellence in teaching and research within the global community, and how we are delivering on our goal of becoming an impact university,” Professor Cameron said.
