Hanoi is very cold, schools switch to online learning, parents still want their children to go to class. |
Ms. Le Thi Tuyet Lan, Principal of Xuan Phuong Primary School (Nam Tu Liem District), said that right after the first class of the week, the school was mentally and physically prepared to switch to online teaching. However, many parents still wanted their children to go to school. Therefore, the school surveyed and asked for parents' opinions.
“According to a survey conducted on the afternoon of January 24, 99.4% of parents requested that their children go to school. As of this morning, only 11 students in the entire school had asked for sick leave or personal family matters. Therefore, the school will still organize for children to go to school in person and have lunch at school,” Ms. Lan informed.
Xuan Phuong Primary School also delayed the school day by 30 minutes compared to normal, starting at 8:15. In addition, recess time will also be shortened. All recess and breakfast activities will take place in the classroom, students will not go out into the hallway unless necessary.
At Trung Van Primary School (Nam Tu Liem), parents were informed to continue to let their students stay home and participate in online learning. However, according to Ms. Giang Thanh Thuy, the school's principal, there are parents who are busy with work, but teachers are still ready to welcome students to school.
“In the past, many students stayed home from school, but today, the temperature is a bit higher, so many students came to school. The school also postponed the school time to 8:30 a.m. to ensure the health of the students. However, teachers still have to be there early to pick up students who go to work with their parents at 7:30 a.m.”
In case the low temperature persists, Ms. Thuy said the school will still be flexible with plans, including online learning to ensure the curriculum. In addition, the school also has an online lecture bank to serve the learning.
At Khuong Ha Primary - Secondary - High School (Thanh Xuan District), Ms. Nguyen Phuong Lien, the school's principal, said that in recent days, the attendance rate for secondary and high school students has reached about 91%.
For primary school, after 2 days off, students were assigned study tasks by teachers, and today, about 82% of students attended class. "At school, students sit in warm rooms, and drinking water and boarding food are delivered to their classrooms, so parents don't need to worry too much," said Ms. Lien.
The principal said that if the cold weather continues, the school will consider a combination of online and in-person learning. In cases where families are unable to care for their children at home, the school will still take them to class.
Having a child studying in grade 4 at Dai Tu Primary School (Hoang Mai), when hearing the school's announcement that it would switch to online learning due to the harsh weather, Ms. Bao Ngoc was not too worried. "Before that, in grades 2 and 3, my child was already familiar with online learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, when hearing the announcement from the teacher, my child could immediately start studying without being unfamiliar with the operation of machines and equipment and without needing the support of parents."
However, yesterday, the parents' committee asked for opinions on online and in-person learning. Ms. Ngoc and most of the parents in the class agreed to let their children go to in-person school, but the school time should be postponed from 7:40 to 8:15.
“My child goes to school in an air-conditioned room, so it’s very warm. Going to school brings many benefits because my child gets to exercise and communicate with teachers and friends. This is something my child won’t get if he studies online at home,” said Ms. Ngoc.
According to regulations, preschool and primary school students are off school when the outdoor temperature is below 10°C; secondary school students are off school when the outdoor temperature is below 7°C.
During cold days, depending on local weather conditions, schools can adjust school hours so that students do not have to arrive too early. In case students arrive late due to weather, schools need to be flexible in resolving the issue so that students can enter school.
