Spain's Real Madrid have given the green light for former striker Raul Gonzalez to negotiate with Villarreal, thereby taking over as head coach of the club.

Raul is currently the coach of Real's reserve team - Castilla, and is still under contract until June 2024. However, the Bernabeu team is willing to terminate the contract without compensation, in order to create conditions for this legend to receive his first official coaching job.

Villarreal are looking for a new coach. Two days ago, they fired Setien after only four rounds of La Liga due to poor results. The "Yellow Submarine" beat Mallorca 1-0 in the second round, but lost the remaining three rounds to Real Betis, Barca and Cadiz.

According to COPE , Real know Villarreal are targeting Raul and have prepared for the 46-year-old's departure by readying Alvaro Arbeloa to succeed him.

Besides Raul, Villarreal is also targeting some coaches who are currently unemployed such as Julen Lopetegui, Marcelo Gallardo or Pacheta. Because La Liga is on a two-week break, giving way to the national teams to concentrate, Villarreal is in no hurry. They are carefully studying each candidate to find the best person.

Raul has always been close to Villarreal. He was a close friend of the club's late director Jose Manuel Llaneza. For a long time, the former Real striker also had frequent contact with Villarreal leaders Fernando Roig and Fernando Negueroles. Roig once expressed his admiration for Raul's management skills and the way he cared for young players.

Raul has coached Real's youth, reserve and U19 teams since starting his coaching career in 2018. He has yet to take the reins as a club manager. The 46-year-old former striker has been with Real since he was 15. He won trophies with the club from 1994 to 2010. From 2010, Raul played the final years of his career for Schalke 04 and Al Sadd before retiring in 2015 with the New York Cosmos.
