Thaco Board Chairman Tran Ba ​​Duong said that Thaco's investment in Quang Nam was a matter of fate. In the past, Thaco was just a small business and Chu Lai Open Economic Zone was just a project that carried the aspiration to escape poverty of Quang Nam province.

“In 2003, Thaco was the first enterprise to invest in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone, with the pressure to make the Open Economic Zone successful and up to now, we have achieved it,” Mr. Tran Ba ​​Duong said about the opportunity for Thaco to invest in Quang Nam.

Decades ago, no one dared to think that Chu Lai Open Economic Zone would develop as it has today. At that time, the entire Eastern Quang Nam region was endless sand dunes, small fishing villages nestled among poplar trees. Quang Nam's economic life at that time was mainly agriculture, there was basically no industry and there were not many businesses or entrepreneurs.

When Chu Lai Open Economic Zone was established in 2003, not many people could imagine how this coastal economic zone would develop. But now, the sandy area has transformed itself, as Quang Nam has realized its aspiration to turn Chu Lai Open Economic Zone into a growth engine. From a small enterprise, Thaco Group has become the "leading crane" leading growth. To date, Chu Lai Open Economic Zone has attracted more than 4.5 billion USD in investment capital, contributing significantly to turning Quang Nam from a poor province to a locality that can balance its own budget and regulate to the Central Government. Investment projects and enterprises in this area have contributed to changing the economic structure and GRDP of Quang Nam, increasing the proportion of industry, construction, trade and services in the local economic structure to 88%, contributing more than 80% of total budget revenue, creating the premise for Quang Nam products to participate in the market and global value chain...

Decades ago, no one dared to think that Chu Lai Open Economic Zone would develop as it has today. At that time, the entire Eastern Quang Nam region was endless sand dunes, with small fishing villages nestled among poplar trees.

Mr. Nguyen Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Planning and Investment of Quang Nam province, said that the Eastern region is developed in the direction of industry - tourism - urban - logistics - safe agriculture and considers this as the economic development strategy of the province.

Over the years, the Eastern region has always accounted for a large proportion of the province's economic structure, from 89.4% in 2010, increasing to 92.4% in 2020 and remaining at 92.3% in 2023. Up to now, the basic infrastructure has been formed, associated with the heritage urban system, especially important infrastructures such as Chu Lai airport, Quang Nam seaport, North-South railway lines, expressways, National Highway 1, coastal roads. Along with that, many large "billion dollar" projects have appeared such as Chu Lai - Truong Hai Automobile Mechanical Industrial Park; Nam Hoi An Resort (phase I); Vinpearl Nam Hoi An Resort Complex; Cat Vang 5-star marine eco-tourism area...

“The Eastern region is affirmed to be the driving force of the province, not only creating jobs, increasing income for people, increasing budget revenue, but also contributing significantly to promoting the economic and labor restructuring of the province, creating many valuable products,” Mr. Hung affirmed.

High determination

In 2025, an important event will take place in Quang Nam, which is the 50th anniversary of the Liberation Day of Quang Nam province (March 24, 1975 - March 24, 2025), an important milestone, marking half a century of spectacular development of the land of Quang.

The past journey shows Quang Nam's determined efforts in economic development, improving people's lives and laying a solid foundation to aim for higher goals in the future.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, with its many potentials and outstanding advantages, Quang Nam is an attractive investment location. In particular, the investment in developing Chu Lai airport associated with the economic zone will create a strong development momentum, regional - national scale, turning the development situation of Quang Nam around.

“Quang Nam has things that are in line with the trend of the times, opening up future stature, such as along the coastal route, especially Chu Lai airport and urban industrial development projects along the coastal route. Chu Lai airport has developed to a very large international level, attracting the attention of many large foreign investors. This is an absolute advantage of Quang Nam, a breakthrough that creates great spillover”, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien expressed his opinion.

Chu Lai International Airport is planned to have a capacity of about 10 million passengers/year by 2030, reaching about 30 million passengers/year by 2050. Chu Lai Airport is also oriented to become an international cargo transit logistics center; a large regional aircraft repair and maintenance center, capable of serving foreign airlines..., becoming one of the 3 largest airports in the country, with a total area of ​​over 2,000 hectares.

According to the Project on Socialization of Investment and Exploitation of Chu Lai Airport, in the period up to 2030, investment will be made to build a passenger terminal with a capacity of about 10 million passengers/year. The demand for capital mobilization for infrastructure investment at Chu Lai Airport is about 11,000 billion VND. Currently, many large corporations in the world have expressed interest in this airport project. In particular, Sovico Group and Adani Group (India) have worked with the leaders of Quang Nam province and proposed to invest in Chu Lai International Airport.

In addition to Chu Lai airport, many other areas in the Eastern Quang Nam region will develop strongly in the coming time. The planning of Quang Nam province for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, clearly defines: "The Eastern region is the driving force of the province with key economic sectors being marine economy, industry, trade, services, tourism, agriculture; concentrating on large urban areas, administrative and political centers of the province. Tam Ky is the administrative, economic, educational and training center; Hoi An is an ecological - cultural - tourist, international exchange urban area with unique products of cultural depth; Dien Ban is an urban area developing industry, science, innovation".

In addition, the province focuses on prioritizing the development of strategic transport infrastructure. In addition to Chu Lai airport, which is invested into an international airport with a scale of level 4F, the province will build Quang Nam seaport to meet class I standards, receiving ships up to 50,000 DWT; be the seaport - container logistics service center of the Central - Central Highlands region, an important cargo hub of the East - West Economic Corridor; form and invest in 2 urban railway lines connecting with the urban railway network of Da Nang city.

Quang Nam will also build new education and training areas to form an education center in the North associated with Da Nang University, and in the South associated with Chu Lai Open Economic Zone following the university urban model. At the same time, focus on developing high-tech industrial centers and ecological industries along the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway and areas along National Highway 1A; promote linkages with Da Nang in the North; linkages between Chu Lai Open Economic Zone and Dung Quat Economic Zone in the South to form a key coastal industrial center of the Central coastal region and the whole country, creating inter-provincial synergy. These will be key factors for the Eastern region to become the economic locomotive of Quang Nam province...

Those draft strategies create a great opportunity for Quang Nam province to enter a new era of development. And Quang Nam has had an impressive run, when in 2024, in the context of many difficulties, the province's GRDP still increased by 7.1%, the economic scale was nearly 129,000 billion VND. In 2025, Quang Nam set a target of economic growth of 9.5 - 10%, the local budget revenue reached 25,000 billion VND...

Speaking at the People's Council meeting at the end of 2024, Quang Nam Provincial Party Secretary Luong Nguyen Minh Triet said that the growth target of 9.5 - 10% in 2025 is very difficult. However, in the general political determination of the whole country, directly the political determination of the General Secretary, it is required to accelerate and make a breakthrough in the final years to prepare for the 100th anniversary of the Party's founding, and must have double-digit growth.

“The central government cannot achieve double-digit growth while the provinces are safe and stagnant in low targets. Although it is extremely difficult, we must make great efforts and have high determination to achieve the growth target,” Mr. Triet emphasized.
