Pogba banned from playing for four years

Italy The Italian anti-doping court has sentenced midfielder Paul Pogba to a four-year ban after he used a banned substance to compete in Serie A in August 2023.

According to Sky Sport Italia on the afternoon of February 29, the court issued a verdict in accordance with the request to punish the French midfielder from the prosecutor of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). The ban will start from September 2023. Pogba has the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Pogba was tested for drugs on 20 August 2023 when Juventus played Udinese in their Serie A opener. The 31-year-old midfielder was on the bench for the match. But tests showed that Pogba had DHEA, a substance that increases testosterone, in his body. A second sample also came back positive in October.

Pogba was suspended as a precaution in September. Since then, Juventus have not allowed the French player to train with them and have reduced his salary to $2,700 per month according to the collective agreement between the clubs and the players' association.

Pogba has only returned to Juventus since the summer of 2022, on a free transfer from Man Utd. Due to injury, the 31-year-old midfielder has only played 10 matches last season and two matches this season for the "Old Lady".

During his first spell at Juventus from 2012 to 2016, Pogba won four Serie A titles, two Italian Cups and two Italian Super Cups. After joining Manchester United for a world record $116 million in 2016, he won another Europa League and a League Cup. However, Pogba never fulfilled his potential as a Golden Boy. After six years of contract, Manchester United agreed to let Pogba go for free.

Pogba's greatest achievement was winning the 2018 World Cup with France. He scored 11 goals in 91 appearances for the national team, including the goal that made it 3-1 in the World Cup final against Croatia 4-2. Due to injury, Pogba had to withdraw from the 2022 World Cup squad, where France lost to Argentina in the final on penalties.
