Successful surgery for rare pediatric meningioma

A 5-year-old patient with a rare meningioma was successfully surgically removed by doctors at Ninh Thuan General Hospital.

On the morning of February 11, Ninh Thuan General Hospital announced that neurosurgeons had successfully performed surgery on a rare case of meningioma in a child.

T. (5 years old, residing in Thanh Hai commune, Ninh Hai district, Ninh Thuan province) was hospitalized with a persistent headache that did not improve with medication and a lump on the back of his head.

After clinical examination and ordering specialized imaging tests, neurosurgeons determined that the tumor had invaded the skull bone and was bleeding inside the tumor, with the risk of compressing the child's neurological structures.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hai - Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Ninh Thuan General Hospital, the child had an occipital meningioma that invaded and destroyed the skull and occipital bones, causing complications of hematoma in the posterior fossa on both sides.

Faced with a complicated case, the neurosurgery team consulted carefully and meticulously and performed surgery to remove the tumor, preventing complications.

After surgery, the patient's health is stable and he has just been discharged from the hospital.

“We have previously performed successful surgeries on many other cases, but mainly on elderly patients. This is the youngest meningioma surgery that Ninh Thuan General Hospital has successfully performed on a pediatric patient,” said Dr. Hai.

According to him, meningioma in children can be very dangerous and cause complications if not detected early.

Therefore, parents need to pay attention when their children show signs such as prolonged headache, nausea, staggering gait, poor vision, slurred speech, fatigue... then take the child to the provincial general hospital or the nearest medical facility for timely examination and treatment.
