(Dan Tri) - France has begun discussions with Denmark about a scenario of deploying troops to Greenland after US President Donald Trump expressed his desire to buy the island.
In a media interview on January 28, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said that his country is ready to deploy military forces to Greenland, an autonomous island of Denmark.
France has begun discussing the issue with Denmark, he said, but Copenhagen has no intention of giving the green light to the mission at this time.
"If Denmark calls for help, France will be there," said Mr. Barrot, stressing that "Europe's borders are sovereign, whether they are north, south, east and west, and no one can allow themselves to interfere in these borders."
According to the French diplomat, during a meeting of EU foreign ministers on January 27, his counterparts from other member states also pledged support for Denmark, signaling a similar willingness to consider deploying troops to Greenland.
In an interview with Die Welt, the former Austrian chief of staff said such a deployment would “send a strong signal and could contribute to stability in the region”. He described the area as one of “great importance from a geopolitical point of view”.
Mr Brieger stressed that although the territory is not legally part of the EU, they have interests in Greenland due to the island's rich reserves of raw materials and its proximity to international trade routes.
The comment came as US President Donald Trump repeatedly mentioned the scenario of the US buying this autonomous territory from Denmark.
Mr. Trump has expressed his desire to buy Greenland and make it part of the US territory, and he has not ruled out using military or economic power to persuade Denmark.
Greenland is strategically located along the shortest route from Europe to North America, making it vital to the US ballistic missile warning system, making it a priority for Mr Trump.
