This is the latest step in a fierce AI race between Big Tech groups over the past six months, as they race to bring innovative AI technologies to market, after ChatGPT launched and created a fever in November last year.
The app will initially only work in the US and will expand to other countries and Android devices in the coming weeks. “With the ChatGPT iOS app, we are taking another step toward our mission of turning modern research into useful tools that empower people, while continually making it more accessible,” OpenAI said.
ChatGPT attracted more than 1 million users in its first three days and is estimated to have reached 100 million monthly active users by January this year. The tool, which has a simple question-answering interface, has been hailed as a breakthrough moment for AI, threatening to disrupt markets ranging from education to media to Google's search engine.
Through the mobile app, the ChatGPT chatbot will reach a wider audience than just on desktop, which could help accelerate its technological advancement.
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the company's ultimate goal is to create general artificial intelligence, a machine that is as smart as a human.
However, ChatGPT in particular and AI in general are making regulators and governments around the world increasingly concerned about its risks and are rushing to introduce strict regulations to monitor this new field.
